Complete set of five softcover volumes, each signed by Henry Wessel, housed in the original publisher?s slipcase. This substantial publication brings together five of Wessel?s most important bodies of work, offering a comprehensive view of his quiet, observational approach to the American West. Across these volumes?California and the West, Odd Photos, Las Vegas, Real Estate Photographs, and Night Walk?Wessel documents vernacular landscapes and everyday environments with the understated clarity that places him within the lineage of postwar American photography and the New Topographics movement.Published by Steidl in a relatively limited edition, Five Books has become one of the key collected presentations of Wessel?s work. Complete signed sets are increasingly scarce on the market and are sought after by collectors of contemporary photography, West Coast imagery, and Steidl publications.A significant and desirable Wessel item, combining breadth of content with strong collector appeal. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Trade PB. 8vo. Square. Hyde Gallery, Grossmont College, El Cajon, CA. 2000. 64 pgs. B/W photographs & plates. Illustrated with 23 photographic plates. Signed by Henry Wessel on the half-title page with lengthy note from Wessel present to the FFEP. Wrappers lightly worn with some light shelf-wear to the extremities present. Book is free of ownership marks. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Taken during a series of late night strolls through an unidentified West Los Angeles neighborhood, Henry Wessel's luminous black and white photographs of Spanish style bungalows, one bedroom matchbox homes, and courtyard apartment buildings reveal the slippery interplay between the homes people live in and the social and material "facts" we infer from them. These anonymous dwellings cloaked in shadows or bathed in the moon's incandescent glow, conjure the penumbral settings of film noir, as does Wessel's use of light and shadow to illuminate the shifty nature of things that appear to be self evident.
