Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. This is a first edition, Prohibition Era bartender's guide "HERE'S HOW AGAIN!" by Judge Jr. 1929 1st edition, 1st printing (with "First Published, January, 1929" stated on the copyright page); The John Day Company; New York. Hardcover with gilt lettering on the front cover. Small in size - the book measures 5" tall x 3 1/4" wide. This volume includes a recipe for the "Tomato Cocktail," a non-alcoholic predecessor to the Bloody Mary. The contents are grouped into the following categories: Applejack Drinks; Applejack and Brandy Drinks; Bacardi Drinks; Brandy Drinks; Gin Drinks; Gin-Bacardi Drinks; Rye Drinks; Scotch Drinks; Miscellaneous. From the author's Foreword: "It is a tragic fact indeed but cocktail mixing in the United States is a lost art. Since the advent of prohibition experienced (and wise) bartenders have left for sunnier climes, leaving drink mixing in the hands of ignorant speakeasy proprietors and amateur home mixers whose idea of a cocktail is some orange juice and gin thrown together in a shaker. Is it any wonder that stomach specialists have reaped a harvest when they have not only poor liquors but atrocious mixers both working for them? For this reason I have dedicated my 1929 Edition of "Here's How" to the delicate art of drink mixing in the hope of renewing an interest in a lost art and in that way doing my bit toward alleviating the suffering of mankind both legislative and physical." Condition: Some light soiling to the covers. The primary issue with this copy is that there are large bits of paper missing at the top and bottom edges of the spine (please see photos). Tiny paper tear at the top-left corner of the back corner. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the pages are clean and nearly appear unread with only a small, light stain at the outer edge of page 8. Overall the book is in Good- condition (it would grade higher if not for the missing paper bits on the spine).
