Meltzer (1916-2008) was a South African pioneer of artificial intelligence who researched radar for Britain during the Second World War. In 1970, he founded the journal Artificial Intelligence and later became a member of the International Joint Council in Artificial Intelligence. As the chair of what is now the University of Edinburgh's Department of Artificial Intelligence, he turned the university into a centre of excellence in the subject. "Taken together with his pioneering work, this will ensure that he will be remembered as a member of that small select band of scientists who founded Artificial Intelligence as a discipline in its own right" (University of Edinburgh).
