Horton Guyford Stever (October 24, 1916 - April 9, 2010) was an American, physicist, educator, and engineer. Guyford Stever was chairman or member of numerous advisory committees to the U.S. government. The NACA's Special Committee on Space Technology, also called the "Stever Committee," was among the better-known of these. It was a special committee that was formed to coordinate various branches of the Federal government, private companies and universities within the United States with NACA's objectives and also harness their expertise in order to develop a space program. Heinz Rudolf Pagels (February 19, 1939 - July 23, 1988) was an American physicist, a professor of physics at Rockefeller University, the chief executive officer of the New York Academy of Sciences. Pagels' work in chaos theory provided the inspiration for the character of Ian Malcolm in Michael Crichton's novel Jurassic Park. For 200 yearsâ"since 1817â"the Academy has brought together extraordinary people working at the frontiers of discovery. Among the oldest scientific organizations in the United States, it has become not only an enduring cultural institution in New York, but also one of the most significant organizations in the global scientific community. Throughout its history, the Academy's Membership has featured thinkers and innovators from all walks of life, including U.S. Presidents Jefferson and Monroe, Thomas Edison, Charles Darwin, Margaret Mead, and many more. The Academy numbers over 20,000 Members in 100+ countries, with a President's Council that includes 36 Nobel Laureates, and a Board of Governors comprised of leaders from business, academia, and philanthropy. This issue focuses on Space Technology, Anti-satellite, Arms Control, Missile Defense, and the Strategic Defense Initiative. A panel included Harold Agnew, Richard Garwin, Charles Townes, Lowell Wood and others.
