Stapled illustrated wrapper with vignette portrait of Lonnie printed in blue on the front cover. The wrapper is lightly faded with scattered foxing, a few small stains, a few tears on the spine with some loss at the head and tail of spine, a few leaves are lightly creased at the upper right corner, a good or better copy. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, to a mixed-race (French and Native American) father and (African American and Native American) mother, Dennis very early became a child evangelist preaching to African American audiences in Georgia. He later decided to pass as white and attended Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard. He also served in the military and became a diplomat, serving most notably in Nicaragua. In the 1930s. Dennis became the leading American intellectual supporting fascism, to the point that he was tried for subversion in 1944 for his fascist views (the indictment was dismissed after the death of the trial judge). In Ralph Ellison's novel *Juneteenth* Dennis was the model for Bliss, the light-skinned African American orphan who tours the South as a boy preacher, runs away, and re-emerges as the race-baiting, reactionary U.S. senator. A scarce copy of the autobiography, written at the tender age of ten, from which the date of publication is thus attributed circa 1903.…
