Neben Porträts berühmter Zeitgenossen, wie George und Vollmoeller, fertigte Bauer zahlreiche Porträts historischer Persönlichkeiten, die immer auch den Anspruch bildlicher Charakterstudien von Person und Werk haben. 1930 zog er von München zurück nach Stuttgart. Teilnahme an der 7.
