Er war ein deutscher Grafiker, Maler und Schriftsteller. Ab 1888 Studium an der Kunstakademie Stuttgart, an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste München, u.a. bei Wilhelm von Lindenschmit. Studienreisen nach Italien und Frankreich. Nach 1896 in München als Illustrator und ab 1903 verstärkt Hinwendung zur Bildniskunst. 1927 Teilnahme an der Münchener Kunstausstellung im Glaspalast. Neben Porträts berühmter Zeitgenossen, wie George und Vollmoeller, fertigte Bauer zahlreiche Porträts historischer Persönlichkeiten, die immer auch den Anspruch bildlicher Charakterstudien von Person und Werk haben. 1930 zog er von München zurück nach Stuttgart. Teilnahme an der 7.
