A? rare opportunity to secure this vintage 5.5" x 3" hand signed autograph book page of Harry Pell?conductor of the Dudley Hippodrome Orchestra in the 1940s and wartime where his autograph rests perfectly accompanying his portrait picture graded good plus to vg minus condition. (image 2 shows a hand drawn warship on the reverse of the autograph).

CHAU1654? Antique? personal letter from 1893 born Billy Russell to a fan who was a famous actor, radio broadcaster and travelling comedian which you will find extensive information on Wicki?also known as "Old Bill" who began his career in fairgrounds but soon became a great entertainer, especially in the war years, and even played Hitler in the 1940 war film Night Train To Munich. The letter is fully hand written and signed by Billy Russell - it does show edge wear and upper indents etc so graded good minus to good overall condition (it is only the edge regions but this must be allowed). It is also folded twice where posted (which is how I will send).? A really character souvenir to this historic actor sent directly from the Brighton Hippodrome (see top right of scan).

Paperback. Condition: VG-. Includes signed photograph of Primo Scala and band. 4 pages folded to 210 x 127 mm. Book is in very good minus condition with minor but noticeable signs of wear and/or age. Has been folded horizontally.

Folio. [4 pp (unpaginated)], bifolium printed only on recto of first leaf, verso of second. With large woodcut engraving of the Hippodrome showing chariots and horses signed by E. Purcell (10 x 5.5 in.), woodcut engraved portrait of Barnum, illustrated ads for Macy & Co., and Moseman & Brother Harness manufacturers. Self-printed wrappers (light creasing, minor toning to fore-edges, slight wear), still an excellent copy. First edition, thus, of this exceedingly scarce printer's proof for one of the last shows of the Great Roman Hippodrome performed in New York before it moved to Boston for it's run there. This show opened in New York in the spring of 1874 and ran until August 1, 1874, and its most famous attraction was the Congress of Nations as listed on the first page here which opened its performances. These performances featured primarily equestrian events, but this scheme included national chariots bearing performers reenacting famous rulers ranging from Confucius to Queen Victoria. Barnum had purchased duplicates of the Congress of Monarchs, a pageant created in London by John and George Sanger. He mixed allegory with historical figures, and historical correctness, which proved wildly popular during the touring show's two year run. Edward Purcell (fl. 1860-1885) was an artist and engraver active in Long Island, Brooklyn, and New York.
