Ce fut pourtant la catastrophe du millénaire qui vient tout juste de se terminer. Rien ne peut lui être comparable car toutes les épidémies antérieures ne touchaient qu'une seule contrée, alors que celle-ci, la peste noire, celle du XIVe siècle, s'étendit sur toutes les parties alors connues du globe. Elle parcourut le monde en l'espace de trois ans et le nombre de ses victimes peut à peine se compter. La population de l'Europe diminua de moitié, celle de l'Angleterre passa de 7 à 2 millions et celle de l'Islande disparut totalement. La peste noire soulevait la peau de reliefs glandulaires ou purulents, la parsemait de disques livides, la couvrait de taches gangréneuses et la rongeait par des ulcères purulents. On ne survivait pas plus de 3 jours. Elle désorganisa les sociétés les plus solides, déclencha des famines, favorisa des révoltes et des pogroms. Elle bouleversa les moeurs et fit croire à la fin du monde. La peste de Marseille et de la Provence, pendant les années 1720 et 1721, touchait une population déjà instruite, car c'était la 18ème fois depuis Jules César que l'épidémie entrait dans les murs de la ville et 70 ans à peine écoulés depuis sa dernière invasion. Le premier effet de la peur fut cependant d'éloigner les personnels utiles à soigner et à faire vivre la ville. La disette en fut le second effet. La maladie qui désola Marseille et qui ensuite étendit ses ravages au-delà du Rhône sur toute la Provence, rappelle dans beaucoup de ses aspects la peste décrite par Thucydide, moins terrible cependant, car ceux qui en guérirent n'eurent pas, comme les Athéniens, les extrémités du corps mutilées par la gangrène. La peste qui atteignit Athènes en 430 avant J.C. venait d'Égypte et de Lybie. Elle survint pendant la guerre du Péloponnèse. Périclès maintint autant qu'il se pouvait l'ordre républicain et mourut à son tour de la maladie.
