He was the librarian and historiographer of King Philip II (the husband of Mary Tudor, Queen of England). Garibay y Zamalloa's history of Spain begins with Tubal (circa 3831 B.C.) He traces the influence of Egyptians, Chaldeans, Persians and Jews, and the part these groups latter played in the foundation of the cities of Seville, Cordoba and Toledo. The history continues with Carthaginians, the invasion of the Romans; the Caesarian period, and Roman Christian Spain. The first volume also comprises the history of Spain under Vandal, Gothic, Arab, Christian and Moorish domination, until the early years of the eleventh century. The second and third volumes deal chronologically with the general history of Spain up to 1566. The fourth volume deals with the separate history of the kingdoms of Aragon, Sicily and Naples, Navarre, Portugal, Cordoba, Castile, Leon, Granada, etc. An important history of Spain from its golden age. This is an oversized or heavy book, which requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US. Signed.

A history of world commerce of the Dutch in the Mediterranean, Baltic Sea, all over Europe, India, and East Asia. Pierre Daniel Huet (1630-1721) was a French bishop, scholar and editor. Spanish translation from the French by Francisco Xavier de Goyeneche. One by one-inch loss of vellum on front board, most of vellum covering on spine missing. Split along gutters, binding almost separated from text block. Binding in poor, interior in very good condition. With Money order (3 3/4" x 8 1/2") of the Nevada Bank San Francisco with original signature of Adolph Sutro, laid-in. The check is dated Oct. 8. 1897, payable to Goldstein Co. in the amount of $ 184.50. Verso of check with handwritten note: "Pay to the order of Ernestine Theling, Goldstein Co. Pay to the order of Nevada Bank, Ernestine Theling per H. Kraus (?)." Adolph Heinrich Joseph Sutro (1830-1898) was the 24th mayor of San Francisco, serving in that office from 1894 until 1896. Various San Francisco landmarks still bear his name. Minor age toning to check. Very good condition.

Ce recueil assez peu courant est entièrement imprimé en lettres gothiques par l'atelier de Firmin Didot, imitant les manuscrits du XVe siècle. Cet ouvrage fait partie des impressions remarquables de la maison Didot. Il contient quatre chroniques « récitées par Cristofe Malivoir le jongleur, [.] en la grande salle du chastel d'Escorailles » : Le Droit de Nopçage, Le Jugement de Dieu, La Cour de Jussienne, Le Vu du faisant. Le texte est accompagné de 64 pages de notes explicatives. L'ouvrage est illustré de lettrines, ornements et de quatre vignettes gravées d'après H. Monnier et Eugène Lami. Les lettres et les ornements sont enluminés. Ex-libris d'Henri Lenseigne contrecollé sur le contre plat. Henri Lenseigne était un grand bibliophile président de la société "Les XX", vice-président de la société "Le livre contemporain", sa bibliothèque a été vendu aux enchères en 1930 et a fait l'objet d'un catalogue rédigé par Carteret.
