Tipu Sultan (born Sultan Fateh Ali Sahab Tipu, 1751-1799), also known as Tipu Sahab or the Tiger of Mysore, was the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore based in South India and a pioneer of rocket artillery. He introduced a number of administrative innovations during his rule, including a new coinage system and calendar, and a new land revenue system which initiated the growth of the Mysore silk industry. He expanded the iron-cased Mysorean rockets and commissioned the military manual Fathul Mujahidin. He deployed the rockets against advances of British forces and their allies during the Anglo-Mysore Wars, including the Battle of Pollilur and Siege of Seringapatam. - Former library copy with discreet spine signature and stamp on title page. - Capitals clearly bumped with small tear, edges somewhat weaker scuffed. Corners slightly rubbed and binding somewhat dusty overall. Title label scraped in places, head cut browned and somewhat stained. Inner cover faintly glue-shaded and brown-stained, paper otherwise still very well preserved and clean. Layers unopened and uncut. Outside somewhat aged, inside well preserved copy of the rare treatise. - Geschichte der Regentschaft Sultan Fateh Ali Sahab Tipus (1751-1799), auch "Tipuh Sahab" oder "Tiger von Mysore, eines innovativen Herrschers des Königreichs Mysore und Pioneer auf dem Gebiet der Raketengeschütze, der unter anderem in einer Allianz mit Napoleon Bonaparte gegen die Briten kämpfte. - Ehemaliges Bibliotheksexemplar mit dezenter Rückensignatur und Stempel auf dem Titelblatt. - Kapitale deutlich bestoßen mit kleinem Einriss, Kanten schwächer. Ecken leicht berieben und Einband insgesamt etwas angestaubt. Titelschild stellenweise beschabt, Kopfschnitt gebräunt und etwas fleckig. Innendeckel schwach leimschattig und braunfleckig, Papier ansonsten noch sehr gut erhalten und sauber. Lagen ungeöffnet und unbeschnitten. Außen etwas gealtertes, innen gut erhaltenes Exemplar der seltenen Originalausgabe. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 1001 Gr. 8° (22,5-25 cm). Sultan Fateh Ali Tippu (1750 -1799), also known as the Tiger of Mysore, was the de facto ruler of the Indian Kingdom of Mysore from 1782 (the time of his father's death) until his own demise in 1799. He was the first son of Hyder Ali by his second wife, Fatima or Fakhr-un-nissa. His full name is Sultan Fateh Ali Khan Shahab or Tipu Saheb Tippu Sultan, in addition to his role as ruler, was a scholar, soldier, and poet. He was a devout Muslim but the majority of his subjects were Hindus. At the request of the French, he built a church, the first in Mysore. In alliance with the French in their struggle with the British both Tippu Sultan and Hyder Ali did not hesitate to use their French trained army against the Marathas, Sira, Malabar, Coorg and Bednur. He was proficient in many languages. He helped his father Hyder Ali defeat the British in the Second Mysore War, and negotiated the Treaty of Mangalore with them. However, he was defeated in the Third Anglo-Mysore War and in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War by the combined forces of the British East India Company, the Nizam of Hyderabad and to a lesser extent, Travancore. Tippu Sultan died defending his capital Srirangapattana, on 4 May, 1799. #5163.
