First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Michael Green (illustrator). 1st Edition. Two large format paperbacks, being both titles "from the collection of Sam Gamgee". The first, "A Hobbit's Travels", is subtitled: "Being the hitherto unpublished Travel Sketches of Sam Gamgee - with space for notes." Basically, a blank journal book with gentle wash drawings on each page that are supposed to represent the sketches made by Sam Gamgee on his "great journey". The owner is encouraged to write their own story in the blank spaces. A fine copy. Has been reprinted, but this first edition is relatively scarce. The second, "A Hobbit's Journal" (1979. 0894710907) is subtitled: "Being a blank book with some various illustrations of friends & foes of the Nine Companions." Basically, another blank journal book with drawings on each page, and again the owner is encouraged to write their own story in the blank spaces. This was a follow-up to "A Hobbit's Travels", but while the earlier book has vague drawings of trees and landscapes, this book contains detailed drawings of characters and scenes from "Lord of the Rings". This book has also been reprinted, and this first edition is also relatively scarce. A near fine copy with lower corners very slightly bumped and top of spine slightly worn. The two books together.
