Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First British Library edition. Quarto [29 cm] Teal cloth over boards with a gilt stamped title on the spine. The covers are just a little cocked. In the illustrated dust jacket, with light scratching to the rear panel. May require extra postage due to weight. From the dust jacket- "This celebrated medieval picture-book tells the Biblical story, focusing upon the Creation to the Flood, the Life of Christ, and the Apocalypse, with the help of illustrations of everyday 14th-century England. It is only loosely based on the Bible and includes plenty of apocryphal episodes, for example Christ 'surfing' on sunbeams as a child, and God telling Noah to hurry up with the Ark so that he is forced to finish the top section in wicker rather than wood. The costumes, tools, weapons and buildings in the pictures give a near documentary-style representation of many occupations in the age of Chaucer, such as dyer, smith, carpenter and midwife. The depiction of drapery, textiles and clothing is exceptionally well realised; the people could almost step right out of the page and perform a medieval miracle play in front of us.".
Folio Society London 2007. First edition. Cloth bound textured boards, plates, bibliography, 162pp. A fine copy.

Photography by Laurence Pordes. Limited edition of 1750 numbered copies, of which this is copy no. 1185. The Holkham Bible was produced in England around 1327-40, and consists of 'some 231 images recounting episodes from the Book of Genesis, the Gospels and the Book of Revelation', accompanied by summary captions in Anglo-Norman French. Innovative in its 'fast-moving pictorial narrative' and perhaps influenced by early Italian Renaissance masters, it consists of intricate 'tinted drawings' that display its artist's 'love of busy action and of minute attention to the detailed depiction of the trappings of everyday life' (Brown, Commentary, pp. 9, 29, 31). With companion commentary volume in quarter turquoise cloth, dark turquoise paper to boards, gilt lettering to spine and cream title label to front board. Michelle P. Brown's commentary gives historical context and includes discussion of each individual image. In custom-made solander box in Fine condition, with Eccles' turquoise diapered cloth to exterior and dark turquoise paper to interior. Elaborate title label to slipcase spine blocked in gilt and red. With loose printed slip giving instructions for care of the leather. The Holkham Bible tells highlights of the Bible story, from Creation, through the life of Jesus, to the Last Judgment. It is only loosely based on the Bible, and includes plenty of apocryphal episodes, especially about Jesus's early life. It does this with brief text that is part prose, part poetry, and most importantly, with a unique sequence of illustrations that draw many of their details from everyday life. The book was probably made in London in the mid-14th century, round about the time of Geoffrey Chaucer's birth.
