Leather binding. Condition: Very Good. Antiquarian book published in 1683, text in Latin, it is bound in what appears to be a mainly original binding, brown leather boards, showing signs of being well handled over the years and yet looking sound and interesting, neat, stitching can be seen on the front board hinge along the spine, blind stamped decorative box is still fairly obvious on the front board, banded spine with leather cracking, label to top of spine was probably maroon, gilt lettering still readable HORAE DIVENAE, , leather flaking at top of spine, rear board leather worn - similar pattern to front just about decypherable, all edge gilt but dulled by wear, book plate tipped in to the reverse side of the front board whcih displays a family Crest under whtch is printed 'This book belongs to the Inner Library, bequeathed by the Will of Tho's. Eyre Esq deceased. Wm Wakeman and Vincent Eyre Esq Acting Executors 1792, . ' on a following clear page there is - hand written in tiny writing - a previous owner's annotations, comments in Latin using sepia ink. The text throughout the book is in black with highlighted sections in red, set out in double column format. This book covers daily religious ceremonies in The Roman Catholic Church, Pagination 1-608 with some sections paginated individually, following page 609 Supplementum AD Dirurnale Romanum 1-12, followed by Commvne Sanctorvm, i-cxcvij, Amid all the text there are 5 black and white engravings in a very good clean condition, opposite page 1 which is headed PSALTERVUM; opposite page 319 which is headed PROPRIVM DE TEMPOLA. ; opposite page 357 which is headed DOMINICA RESVRECTIONIS; ; oppostie page 394 whcih is headed FESTO PENTECOSTES and opposite page 553 which is headed IN ASSVAPTIONE B MARIAE VIRGINS. In addition to the five full page engravings. There are small vignettes providing emphasis to chapters and ends of sections (both in red and black) . This book will have been used over the centuries to administer the Roman Catholic faith, the notes in sepia ink and simple strips of paper used as book marks indicate religious committment and dedication from previous owners. One wonders who has used this book and where it has been? . It was certainly at one time in the possession of Thomas Eyre of Hassop whose Last Will and Testament caused a little controversy owing to a codicile added shortly before his death, a bequest was awarded despite a challenge in the Courts. As indicated on the Bookplate at the front this volume was bequeathed to the Inner Library by Thomas Eyre. Looking again at the title page the lettering HORAE DIVRNAE is in red. BREVIARII ROMANI is printed in black, the next section Ex decreto Sacrofundti ------------ is in red then the text reverts to black and reads " Inquibus ea omnia continentur, quaepraeter Lectioones & euruum ad plenam Officij Matutini recitationem paertinent. " beneath this is vignette of rhe Papal Seal showing crossed keys. The title page is clean and not stained. Size of book 6.75 x 4.25 x 2.00 inches approx. This is an antiquarian treasure from the late seventeenth century a liturgical book written in Latin containing rites of the Catholic church, including prayers, hymns, readings, and notations for daily use. A collectable work for reference or heirloom.
