Hardcover, 8vo. First edition, not stated. 269 pgs., First U.S. edition (first published date matches copyright page date) The binding is red cloth, front cover has a light water-stain mark, as does the back cover; spine is soiled and faded somewhat but all lettering is visible and there are no splits. Edges are a bit dirty, and top edge was publisher-stained gray. Prior water contact transferred some of the edge-stain ink into the pages of first half of book, 1/2" or less deep and very faintly marking each page about 1" near outer page tips. The jacket is age-toned but not water-stained, has minor chipping and spine sunning, no other marks. Irish-born but mostly domiciled in England and on the continent, this and "The Death of the Heart" which followed it are the novels which secured Ms. Bowen's reputation as a leading "European" writer in her generation. Good used condition in a Very Good Dust Jacket.
