A long but incomplete run of T'ien Hsia, a monthly magazine published in Shanghai, from the library of art collector and dealer Mathias Komor with his ownership etiquette on the reverse of the front cover. All copies with original soft card covers with overlapping (yapp)edges and retaining the original adverts. The set consists of vol. I, nos. 1 - 5 (August - December 1935; vol. II, nos. 1- 5 (January 1936 -May 1936); vol. III, nos.1-5 (August-December 1936); vol. IV, nos. 1,2,3 & 5 (January - June 1937); vols. V & VI lacking; vol. VII, nos. 2-5 (September - December 1938); vol. VIII, nos.1-5 (January - May 1939); vol. IX, nos. 1-5 (August - December 1939); vol. X, nos. 1-5 (January - May 1940); vol. XI, nos. 2 -5 (October - November 1940 to April - May 1941). Publication in Shanghai and then in Hong Kong ceased after the Japanese invasions (1937 and 1941). Although advertised as a monthly magazine it seems not to have been issued in June or July. "The editors of the magazine were ethnic Chinese, including editor-in-chief Wen Yuan-ning. Contributors included C. R. Boxer, Chuan Tsen-kuo, William Empson, Emily Hahn, Lin Yutang, Shao Xunmei (Zau Sinmay), and John C.H. Wu. There are also contributions by Mathias Komor, Lawrence Durrell and Henry Miller. The translation of Lao Tzu's "The Tao and Its Virtue" translated into English by John C. H. Wu is to be found in vol. IX no. 4 (pp. 401-423),vol. IX no. 5 (pp. 498 - 521) and vol. X, no. 1, (pp.66-99). A total of 45 issues.
