Learners, teachers, and knowledge workers are constantly exposed to new, cost-effective technologies. However, the knowledge gained in educational institutions may not be sufficient for a lifetime. Learning and working are parallel processes, making lifelong learning (LLL) essential in today's society. The surge in educational technologies is significant, but it is crucial to remember that learning is fundamentally a cognitive and social process that cannot be wholly replaced by technology.

I felt there was a need for this change because ofth e ever increasingin terestp romptedb…yth e issues involved in interactive mobile systems and the lack of specific eventsf ocusing on such aspects. Although there are eventsa ddressing thebr oad areaof ubi quitous computing, they tend to concentrate on other topics. For example, a paper on criteria for the design of interactive mobile phone applications would bec onsidered inappropriate for such events, whereas it would certainly be relevant for Mobile HCI. The response to the symposium has been positive in terms of submissions and participation. The contributions, especially the long papers, werese lected carefully by the International Program Committee. The result is a set of interesting and stimulating papers that address such important issues as location awareness, design criteria for PDAs, context dependent systems, innovative case studies, usability evaluation in small devices, and novel interfaces for mobile devices. The interest shown in the symposium has truly been worldwide: we have authors from 16 countries on three continents. There is a good balance of contributions from academia and industry.

Informatics is rapidly changing and becoming more and more connected to a number of human and social science disciplines. Human-computer interaction is now a mature and still dynamically evolving part of this area, which is represented in IFIP by the Technical Committee 13 on HCI. In this WCC edition it was interesting and useful to have again a Symposium on Human-Computer Interaction in order to p- sent and discuss a number of contributions in this field. There has been increasing awareness among designers of interactive systems of the importance of designing for usability, but we are still far from having products that are really usable, and usability can mean different things depending on the app- cation domain. We are all aware that too many users of current technology often feel frustrated because computer systems are not compatible with their abilities and needs in existing work practices. As designers of tomorrow's technology, we have the - sponsibility of creating computer artifacts that would permit better user experience with the various computing devices, so that users may enjoy more satisfying expe- ences with information and communications technologies.
