The Workgroup Human-Computer Interaction & Usability Engineering (HCI&UE) of the Austrian Computer Society (OCG) serves as a platform for interdisciplinary research and development. While HCI traditionally connects psychologists and computer scientists, usability engineering (UE) focuses on the effective implementation of applications within software engineering. In 2008, the theme was Human-Computer Interaction for Education and Work (HCI4EDU), culminating in the 4th annual Usability Symposium USAB 2008 in Graz, Austria. Similar to the previous year's focus on HCI in Medicine and Health Care (HCI4MED), technological advancements in education and work are rapidly increasing. Learners, teachers, and knowledge workers are constantly exposed to new, cost-effective technologies. However, the knowledge gained in educational institutions may not be sufficient for a lifetime. Learning and working are parallel processes, making lifelong learning (LLL) essential in today's society. The surge in educational technologies is significant, but it is crucial to remember that learning is fundamentally a cognitive and social process that cannot be wholly replaced by technology.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The IFIP World Computer Congress (WCC) is one of the most important conferences in the area of computer science at the worldwide level and it has a federated structure, which takes into account the rapidly growing and expanding interests in this area. Informatics is rapidly changing and becoming more and more connected to a number of human and social science disciplines. Human-computer interaction is now a mature and still dynamically evolving part of this area, which is represented in IFIP by the Technical Committee 13 on HCI. In this WCC edition it was interesting and useful to have again a Symposium on Human-Computer Interaction in order to p- sent and discuss a number of contributions in this field. There has been increasing awareness among designers of interactive systems of the importance of designing for usability, but we are still far from having products that are really usable, and usability can mean different things depending on the app- cation domain. We are all aware that too many users of current technology often feel frustrated because computer systems are not compatible with their abilities and needs in existing work practices. As designers of tomorrow's technology, we have the - sponsibility of creating computer artifacts that would permit better user experience with the various computing devices, so that users may enjoy more satisfying expe- ences with information and communications technologies.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - It was a wager, but it has worked. MobileH CIuse dt obe a w orkshop,of ten heldi n conjunction with other events. Instead, this time it was a true symposium. I felt there was a need for this change because ofth e ever increasingin terestp romptedb yth e issues involved in interactive mobile systems and the lack of specific eventsf ocusing on such aspects. Although there are eventsa ddressing thebr oad areaof ubi quitous computing, they tend to concentrate on other topics. For example, a paper on criteria for the design of interactive mobile phone applications would bec onsidered inappropriate for such events, whereas it would certainly be relevant for Mobile HCI. The response to the symposium has been positive in terms of submissions and participation. The contributions, especially the long papers, werese lected carefully by the International Program Committee. The result is a set of interesting and stimulating papers that address such important issues as location awareness, design criteria for PDAs, context dependent systems, innovative case studies, usability evaluation in small devices, and novel interfaces for mobile devices. The interest shown in the symposium has truly been worldwide: we have authors from 16 countries on three continents. There is a good balance of contributions from academia and industry.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The work group Human-Computer Interaction & Usability Engineering (HCI&UE) of the Austrian Computer Society (OCG) serves as a platform for interdisciplinary exchange, research and development. While human-computer interaction brings together psychologists and computer scientists, usability engineering is a discipline within software engineering. It is essential that psychology research must be incorporated into software engineering at a systemic level. The aspect of integration of human factors into informatics is especially important, since it is here that innovations take place, systems are built and applications are implemented. Our 2007 topic was 'Human-Computer Interaction for Medicine and Health Care' (HCI4MED), culminating in the third annual Usability Symposium USAB 2007 on November 22, 2007 in Graz, Austria (meduni-graz.at/imi/usab-symposium). Medical information systems are already extremely sophisticated and technological performance increases exponentially. However, human cognitive evolution does not advance at the same speed. Consequently, the focus on interaction and communication between humans and computers is of increasing importance in medicine and health care. The daily actions of medical professionals must be the central concern, surrounding and supporting them with new and emerging technologies. Information systems are a central component of modern knowledge-based medicine and health services, therefore knowledge management needs to continually be adapted to the needs and demands of medical professionals within this environment of steadily increasing high-tech medicine. information processing, in particular its potential effectiveness in modern health services and the optimization of processes and operational sequences, is ofincreasing interest.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Workgroup Human-Computer Interaction & Usability Engineering (HCI&UE) of the Austrian Computer Society (OCG) serves as a platform for interdisciplinary - change, research and development. While human-computer interaction (HCI) tra- tionally brings together psychologists and computer scientists, usability engineering (UE) is a software engineering discipline and ensures the appropriate implementation of applications. Our 2008 topic was Human-Computer Interaction for Education and Work (HCI4EDU), culminating in the 4th annual Usability Symposium USAB 2008 held during November 20-21, 2008 in Graz, Austria . As with the field of Human-Computer Interaction in Medicine and Health Care (HCI4MED), which was our annual topic in 2007, technological performance also increases exponentially in the area of education and work. Learners, teachers and knowledge workers are ubiquitously confronted with new technologies, which are available at constantly lower costs. However, it is obvious that within our e-Society the knowledge acquired at schools and universities - while being an absolutely necessary basis for learning - may prove insufficient to last a whole life time. Working and learning can be viewed as parallel processes, with the result that li- long learning (LLL) must be considered as more than just a catch phrase within our society, it is an undisputed necessity. Today, we are facing a tremendous increase in educational technologies of all kinds and, although the influence of these new te- nologies is enormous, we must never forget that learning is both a basic cognitive and a social process - and cannot be replaced by technology.…
