Pages and plates are bright and clear with light tanning to text block edges. Binding remains firm with mild creasing to gutters and hinges. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild water staining, tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has similar staining and tanning with soft crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean. Unclipped dust jacket with minor rubbing, chipping and tearing to edges. Moderate foxing, tanning and scuffing overall.

Hardcover. xvi, 398p., numerous b&w photoillustrations, uncommon ones, second printing of the 1968 first issue. Hardbound in 10x6.5 inch black cloth boards gilt, enclosed in the dust jacket. Book itself has a touch of color-loss to spine rims, and a little dust to top edge; while the dust jacket has an inconspicuous line of dampstain to lower edge that is visible only from its verso. FYI, the dust jacket also shows foxing spots, but these are not actual, simply part of the period images that illustrate. Item is quite sound, otherwise clean, and free of any ownership or institutional markings.

Decorated by publisher's device on verso of title. A work of collective biography, concentrating on three members of this high achieving family. The founder was Thomas Henry Huxley (1816-87), distinguished scientist, biologist and anthropologist, and a strong supporter of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. He himself had taken part in a similar voyage of scientific exploration to Darwin's, aboard the Rattlesnake in the southern hemisphere, 1846-50, studying marine invertebrates. The other two notable Huxleys were the two grandsons of Thomas Henry, Julian (1882-1975), the biologist, and the writer, Aldous (1894-1963), author of Brave New World (1932).
