Fine condition gold boards/maroon cloth spine/gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. The upper left rear jacket tip contains a small 1/8th inch repaired closed tear. (see photographs). Includes Dedications; Acknowledgments and Introduction. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. The upper left corner of the blank first free front endpaper contains a small vintage Christmas 1991 scripted gift inscription. "Henry Aaron left his mark on the world by breaking Babe Ruth's record for home runs. But the world has also left its mark on him. "Hammering Hank" Aaron's story is one that tells us much about baseball, naturally, but also about our times. His unique, poignant life has made him a symbol for much of the cosial history of twentieth-century America. Raiised during the Depression in the Deep South enclave of Movile, Alabama, Aaron broke into professional baaseball as a cross-handed slugger and shortstop for the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League. A year later, he and a few others had the unforgettable mission of integrating the South Atlantic League. A year after that, he was a timid rookie leftfielder for the Milwaukee Braves, for whom he became a World Series hero in 1957 as well as the Most Valuable Player of the National League. Aaron found himself back in the South when the Braves moved to Atlanta in 1965. Nine years later, in the heat of hatred and controversy, he hit his 715th home run to break Ruth's and basebeall's most cherished record - a feat that was recently voted the greatest moment in baseball history. That year, Aaron received over 900,000 pieces of mail, many of them vicious and racially charged. In a career that may be the most consistent baseball has ever seen, Aaron also set all-time records for total bases and RBIs. He ended his playing days by spending two nostalgic seasons back in Milwaukee with the Brewers, then embarked on a new career as an executive with the Atlanta Braves. He was for a long time the highest-ranking black in baseball. In this position, Aaron has become an unofficial spokesman in racial matters pertaining to the national pastime. Because of the depth and pertinence of Aaron's dramatic experiences, I Had a Hammer is more than a baseball autobiography. Henry Aaron's candor and insights have produced a revealing book about his extrraordinary life and times." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. First edition, first printing. Signed and inscribed by Aaron on 2/22/91 in blue marker to the front endpaper. Publisher's cloth, dust jacket. An excellent copy, in an unclipped dust jacket with the spine ends lightly bumped, else fine. Aaron's career with the Negro leagues was rather short lived, playing with the Indianapolis Clowns for a mere three months in 1951 when his exceptional performance was quickly recognized with offers from the New York Giants and Milwaukee Braves. A contract difference of $50 is all that kept Aaron from joining Willie Mays and the Giants in New York. By 1954 and gaining more experience in the minor leagues, Aaron made his major league appearance with the Braves and his new teammates, Eddie Mathews and Warren Spahn. After only four seasons, Aaron helped lead the Braves in 1957 to a 7 -ame World Series Championship over Casey Stengel's New York Yankees and winning the NL MVP the same year. The next three years, the hard hitting right fielder won the Gold Glove award. In addition to reaching the milestone of breaking Babe Ruth's home run record, Aaron hit over 3,000 hits (3,771) and is now one of three Hall of Famers (Willie Mays and Eddie Murray) to hit both 3,000 hits and 500 home runs in their career. Aaron maintains the all-time record for career RBIs, total bases, and extra-base hits. He was a 4 time NL home run leader and won two batting titles. Aaron was inducted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982 (first ballot). Signed by Author.
