Frederick Warne & Co. was founded in London in 1865 by Frederick Warne. "During the last half of the nineteenth century the company built a good reputation for publishing children's books by well-known authors and artists as Edward Lear, Kate Greenway and Walter Crane. The company also published a 'Pictorial' series of books of collections of short essays and illustrations on many non-fiction topics." - wikipedia.Edmund Evans (1826-1905), one of the most collectible wood-engravers and color printers of the Victorian era. He specialized in full-color printing and employed and collaborated with illustrators such as Walter Crane, Randolph Caldecott, Kate Greenaway and Richard Doyle to produce some of the most sought-after children's books by modern collectors. His woodblock printing technique is known as chromoxylography - color printing from wood, similar in name to chromolithography, color printing from stone - and he was meticulous in the production of color illustration, using a hand-press in the work. He is considered by many to have been the very best wood engraver and color printer in Great Britain during the second half of the 19th century.

Fourth edition. The Preface refers to it as a ÒPictorial EditionÓ that is Òin every respect equal to its predecessors, and in some points superior.Ó Though pagination differs between the 1872 edition (108 pp.) and the 1873 and 1874 editions (76 pp.), what textual differences there are between those editions and the fourth edition is something we cannot determine without being able to compare them. All editions are scarce, with OCLC recording a combined total of seven copies of the 1872, 1873, and 1874 editions, the majority of them in the U.K Twelvemo. 108 pp. Chromolithographic frontispiece and every page with four chromolithographic illustrations, each accompanied by a Bible verse. Every illustrated leaf is followed by a blank leaf, ruled in red and meant to be filled in by hand PublisherÕs brown cloth decoratively stamped in black and gilt, gilt spine. All edges gilt. Binding extremities a bit worn, spine slightly toned. Front hinge cracked, but sound. Light foxing, contemporary ink inscriptions on the blank leaves, with most of the writing space empty. A very good, tight copy.
