First edition, first printing. Fowler's only full-length novel, Illusion in Java is a surreal and feverish fable exploring of escapism and moral dislocation in the interwar world interwoven with the strange and beautiful folklore of the Javanese people. A wonderful association copy inscribed from Fowler to Nat "Gimlet Eye" Deverich. Deverich was a fellow denizen of the early Hollywood literary circuit and one-time colleague at the Selznick agency. A remarkable association between two behind-the-scenes figures of American letters and film, capturing a moment of literary ambition before Fowler fully transitioned to screenwriting and biography. Lightly rubbed extremities, overall near fine in fine, spine-toned dust jacket, in mylar cover. Brown, cream, and maroon patterned cloth, top stain red, in George Salter dust jacket ($2.50).
