This is one of the cute little booklets privately printed by Cape for distribution as a Christmas "keepsake" to friends and supporters of the publishing house. It comprises seven short literary conversations, uncredited but almost certainly penned by Daniel George, Cape's reader and the editor of the in-house journal "Now & Then", from where these sketches are taken. Slight browning and rubbing to wrappers, staples a little rusty, but otherwise a near fine copy.

Apart from this somewhat inexplicable choice, the interior appears very good. All three text block edges inked blue. Binding is ti9ght and sturdy. Gray cloth with mild wear, darkened at spine; gilt titling remains reasonably bright; "Dent" at spine heel is only blind-stamped. Lacking dust jacket. A scarce title in this series. NOT ex-lib. Limited, signed edition. Sinclair at his best - or worst. A unique mixture of fiction, history, and autobiography, set in the Welsh borderlands. As one reviewer commented "There are plot lines galore: murder, suicides, mental asylums, a good deal of bookselling and buying (Sinclair's old trade), readings, writings. There are cameos from the past: David Jones, Father Ignatius, Henry and Thomas Vaughan, and Francis Kilvert are presences through much of the book, and Allen Ginsberg and Bruce Chatwin also pop up. A number of Sinclair's friends and acquaintances also have roles, from Michael Moorcock to the usual cast of odd characters that follow him from book to book, who live, like him, 'on the ledge of the peripheral'. The Jeremy Thorpe affair plays a role. And, of course, there's Walter Savage Landor, towering (vaguely) behind it all."
