National book award finalist. Imogen Cunningham loved to observe the world. She noticed the colors in the woods outside her house and how light and shadows moved between the trees. She tried to capture this beauty on paper with pencils, but something was missing. One day she read about a woman in Paris who earned a living as a photographer, and she knew she was meant to do the same. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. 120 duotone illustrations. You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are very clean. There is a little bit of color fade off the top edge of the front and rear. The silver lettering on the spine is still fairly bright. The cover edges are in very good shape, a few tiny spots on the bottom ones, no rubbing. The cover corners are also in very good shape, no rubbing. The spine ends look very good. The page edges are very clean. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers are a light purple. They are very clean. All the pages are very clean. Scrolling through, I haven't found any instances soiling. I'm not finding any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. There are no markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I'm seeing only two or three tiny spots of soiling. There is a crease below the front top corner. There is a fairly small, thin tear off the rear bottom edge. The flaps are in very solid shape, very clean, no soiling, no tears. There is a small crease just below the front flap's top corner. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I've always had it in a fitted protective cover. From the dust jacket: Imogen was a superb photographer. She was also an unforgettable person, someone who could enthrall a photography class or steal the Johnny Carson show. The author, a close friend despite a difference of nearly sixty years in their ages, recalls that life and unique personality through the reminiscences of Imogen's family and friends. The speakers include famous figures in the photography world like Ansel Adams, Brett Weston, and Beaumont Newhall, as well as private people who remember the tart, eccentric, perpetually busy Imogen. In these outspoken, funny, often touching conversations, friends talk of the photography world, of Imogen's stories, and bring out their old snapshots. Judy Dater brought along her camera, and her compelling portraits of Imogen's friends add an important dimension to this lively and beautiful book.' 'She was a remarkable woman,' says Beaumont Newhall. 'Of that there is no doubt.' '.
