Add to basketPrinted wrappers, small 4to, 82 pp + 31 plates. 76 lots. From the preface: "Sion College was founded by the bequest of Thomas White, D.D., who died in 1624. The Library grew with the help of many small donors including Matthew Forster's Gift in 1646 of Caxton's First Book, the Recuyell of the Histories of Troye, Printed at Bruges in 1474-75 (Lot 36). Another early bequest was from the Library of Walter Travers (1548 ?-1635), Puritan Divine. This Included a Mercator Atlas (Lot 42) with a manuscript inscription dated 1636. However, the college buildings and a third of the books were lost in the Great Fire of 1666. The first of the larger donations was thc library of Sir Robert Coke, bequeathed to the college by Coke's nephew by marriage, George, Earl of Berkeley (1628- 1698). Items from this bequest may usually be identified by their specially printed book-labels, and include the two other Caxtons in this sale, Christine de Pisane, the Book of Fayttes of Armes and of Chyvaire, 1489 (Lot 14), and Cicero, Dc Senecrute (in English), 1481 (Lot 15). Shortly afterwards, in 1705, Sion received a large bequest from Dr. John Lawson, President of the Royal College of Physicians; three books in this sale contain a label, similar to that provided for the Coke-Berkeley Collection, denoting this provenance (Lots 7, 16 and 55). In 1711 the Library of Thomas James, a printer and grandson of Bodley's first librarian, was given to the college by his widow. His books included a valuable collection of tracts by Robert Greene (Lot 30). Other donors Include Nathaniel Torperley (1564-1632) mathematician, who spent several years as a resident of the college, and Richard Rawlinson (1690-1755), the eminent topographer and benefactor of the Bodleian Library; One of his books is Machlinia's English Statutes, Printed in London, 1484 (Lot 27). English Literature Is represented by, amongst other books, the very rare Shakespeare's Lucrece, 1594 (Lot 56), as well as his Othello, 1630 (Lot 57), Hamlet, 1637 (Lot 59) and Henry the Fourth, 1639 (Lot 60). Present also are Barnfield's the Affectionate Shepheard, 1594 (Lot 8), Drayton's the Shepheard's Garland, 1593, and Matilda, 1594 (Lot 23), Lupton's Siuqila. Too Good to Be True, 1587-1591 (Lot 38), Spirito's the Booke of Fortune, 1618, (Lot 65) and Watson's an Ouldfacioned Loue, 1594 (Lot 68). Lot 69 is a collection of nine very rare grammatical works, c. 1528-1531, by Robert Whittinton; and Lot 61 Shirley's the Sisters, 1652, with markings by the Prompter of the King's Company, Charles Booth. There are two interesting books on music, Mace's Musick's Monument, 1676, (Lot 40) and Playford's Select Ayres and Dialogues, 1659 (Lot 51). For Travel and Topography there are Keith's New-Englands Spirit of Persecution Transmitted to Pennsilvania, Philadelphia 1693 (Lot 35), Smith's the Generall Historie of Virginia, 624 (Lot 63), de Bry's Major and Minor Voyages (Lots 21 and 22) and Works by Ortelius, Mercator, Speed and Camden. Among the manuscripts there is a very fine French 'Bestiary' on Vellum, with 94 miniatures, of the last quarter of the XIlith Century, a hitherto unrecorded book from the Library of Humfrey, Duke of Gloucester, (1397-1447), 'protector' of Oxford University and Patron of its Library (Lot 72). There are also two twelfth century English Manuscripts of Suetonius's de Vita Caesarum (Lots 70 and 71) and a Portion of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, England c. 1460-90 (Lot 73), Manuscripts relating to the booksellers, Thomas Bennett and Henry Clements (Lot 75), and the Organisation of Early American Libraries (Lot 76) by Thomas Bray." Covers a trifle faded, otherwise good. List of estimates laid in.
