Resistance and women migrants to Mauritius under the indenture system/Marina Carter. 10. Conclusion: on resistance and accommodation/Doug Munro. Index. Indian indenture historiography has come of age as a specialized field of study not as an appendage to British imperial or Indian colonial historiography, which was largely concerned with the administration of the system. Many historians, who are themselves descendants of the girmityas are now more interested in the lives of the labourers themselves. Hugh Tinkers a new system of slavery 1974 which emphasized the violence and brutality of the system and underscored the enormous contribution the labourers had made to their various countries of residence, was an influential text. At the same time it was a totalizing narrative that admitted little in the way of difference and diversity in the totality of the human experience of indenture. Recent scholarship on indenture has moved away from grand moral questions of right and wrong to investigating lived experience of servitude. This collection, then, questions the assumption that the labourers had no agency and no capacity to resist demands made on their body and soul by those who worked them. The essays in this volume and their overall trajectory will open up space for comparative discussion of other aspects of Indian indenture experience which will serve to restore humanity and agency to a group long confined to the unlovely fringes of history. Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. The articles in this volume are grouped in four parts. Part 1 concentrates on indenture in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean and includes four diverse, but inter-related chapters. They reveal newly-emerging, impressive trends in the study of indenture, departing from the over used neo-slave scholarship. The chapters in part 2 re-examine personal narratives of indentured labourers, the continuous connection between the Caribbean and India as well as education and Christianization of Indians in Trinidad. The analysis of personal accounts of indentured servants themselves certainly provides an alternative perception to archival information written mostly by the organizers of indenture. Part 3 focuses on ethnicity and politics and shows that in segmented societies like Suriname, Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago institutional politics and political mobilization are mainly ethnically based. Part 4 addresses health, medicine and spirituality-themes which, until recently, have received little attention. The first article examines the historical impact of colonialism through indentureship on the health, health alternatives and health preferences of Indo-Trinidadians, from the period between 1845 to the present. The second examines the use of protective talismans by Indian indentured labourers and their descendants. It is a contribution to psychological research on the spiritual world of Indian immigrants, enslaved Africans and their respective descendants, with special reference to the use of talismans.
