Ware's unit fought its own war against the Sioux and Cheyenne in the Dakotas, Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska. The 7th Iowa patrolled and fought to keep the overland trail open from Fort Kearney, Nebraska, to Fort Laramie, Wyoming.
