Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Book: NEAR FINE; "In 1966 and 1967 Miss Doris Duke of New York supported a wide program, the central objective of which was to obtain from the American Indians their views of American history and of their place in American society. The program at the University of Utah was carried out by the Western History Center. This catalog lists the collections made and processed during the first two years of the project. - Operations were confined largely to Utah and the neighboring states and nearly all of the entries listed indicate a taped interview; where tapes were not made the interview sheets containing important information have been included. - Listings are by author under the broad tribal designation or by the location where the tape was made; the general range of subjects covered is indicated. - The number on the right margin is the permanent catalog number which identifies the tape, interview sheet, and completed transcription. Tapes of all meaningful interviews have been preserved. There are over two hundred entries in the catalog and these total nearly three thousand pages of typescript. - The collection, to be known as American Indian Oral History: The Duke Collection, will be preserved intact and housed in the Western Americana Division of the University of Utah Library, Salt Lake City, Utah. - October 1, 1968; SCARCE; a nice, clean, unmarked, bright, tight copy.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 2 Volumes, folio, illustrated with over 100 plates. Some wear a to binding , normal aging; otherwise very good. This is a highly detailed and influential work based on the efforts of Henry R. Schoolcraft (1793-1864). Schoolcraft spent his life studying the manners and customs of Native Americans, and in 1822 was appointed agent of Indian Affairs of the Northwest frontier. In1847 he was asked by Congress to do research on the tribes of the United States, and from 1850-1857 he published six volumes on the history, condition and prospects of the American Indian. In 1880 Drake would update Schoolcraft's work, and publish his efforts in these two rather massive volumes. This work has to be considered one of the most important studies on American Indian tribes, providing considerable detail on their manners, customs and history.
