Add to basketHalf Leather Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition Thus. 1822. First 'Lockhart edition in five volumes (John Gibson Lockhart, 1794-1854, was a Scottish writer and edited Peter Motteux's edition of Don Quixote, to which he prefixed a life of author Miguel de Cervantes). lxiv, 366pp.; vii, 328pp.; viii, 350pp.; viii, 331pp.; viii, 355pp. (all five volumes are lacking the half-title page). The five volumes are uniformly bound in contemporary or slightly later half leather over marbled paper covered boards with gold titling on a leather label on the spines. The books have been rebacked and recased in the old boards with the old spine overlaid on new leather, and as a result the books are tight and secure (this repair is probably from the late 20th century). The cases of the books have shelf wear on the boards and some expected damage with a little loss to the paper on the edges of the boards. The corners are lightly bumped with some damage and a little loss to the leather on the corner tips. The old spine leather is scuffed with some pitting and the volume numbering on the spines is worn and indistinct. Pieces are missing from the ends and edges of the old overlaid spines with the newer leather being visible. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and some browning and foxing to the last thirty or so pages of volume 4 and a small stain or burn mark on the title-page and first contents page of volume 5. There is no inscription. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavy set and extra postage will be required.
