Various Mitchell biographies and several compilations of her letters told part of the story, but until 2011, no single source had revealed the full saga. Now updated with two new chapters that bring the saga into 2021, this entertaining account of a literary and pop culture phenomenon tells how Mitchell's book was developed, marketed, distributed, and otherwise groomed for success in the 1930s-and the savvy measures taken since then by the author, her publisher, and her estate to ensure its longevity. ; FINE. Two copies of the rehearsal script of the Broadway version, one signed by the authors on the title page, the other inscribed to Clive Hirschhorn on the title page, "Love to Clive from Jerry (a.k.a. Jerome Lawrence)". The play concerns the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, although the writers later explained that the work was intended t…o criticize McCarthyism in the 1950s. Jerome Lawrence (1915-2004) formed a writing partnership with Robert E. Lee (1918-1994) during the Second World War, and the pair became prolific writers for radio. Inherit the Wind was their first play for the live theatre and was written to highlight the political persecution of left-wing supporters in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s. The play fictionalizes the trial of John T. Scopes in 1925 for teaching human evolution in contravention of a Tennessee state law. Inherit the Wind was first presented in Dallas at the beginning of 1955. The Broadway rights were then acquired by producer Herman Shumlin, and the Broadway production ran 21 April 1955 until 22 June 1957. The text was first published by Random House in September 1955, and a film adaptation was released in 1960, directed by Stanley Kramer. There are two duplicate scripts here. They comprise a title page, cast list (1 leaf), script of Act 1 (41 leaves), Act 2 (39 leaves), and Act 3 (20 leaves). The title page notes "As produced at The National Theatre, New York, April 21, 1955". The name, address and telephone number of the producer is included, together with the telephone number of the stage manager. Folio. Mimeographic typescripts (280 x 220 mm) printed on rectos only. Original green wrappers, front wrapper lettered in silver comprising title and "Hart Stenographic Bureau" name and address, two metal screw brads. Housed in custom black cloth folding box. Creases and some minor loss to wrappers, fore edge of title page in one copy a little worn: very good copies.

The Broadway premier took place at the National Theatre on 21 April 1955. It was firstly adapted for film in 1960, and most recently in 1999. Octavo.
