American first edition (per "First published . . ." statement upon copyright page). 264 pages. Hardcover: H 28.25cm x L 22.25cm. Caldecott winner Leo Lionni-designed white dust jacket rubbed and soiled; small stain to rear panel; sun fading to spine's two-color title block; some shallow wear and short tears; front flap's top corner is clipped; dj now presented in a mylar Brodart protector. Red cloth with bright white and green stamping to spine and front board. Slight foxing to text block edges. Foxing to initial and rear leaves; wife's Christmas 1955 three-line ink inscription to husband Gene Millsap (Montgomery, Alabama architect Eugene Temple Millsap Jr., 1923-2007, who specialized in the design of hospital and medical facilities) on front free endpaper verso; faint toning at margins of interior leaves which are otherwise clean.
