Add to basketPaper. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Two Original letters and a Translation from the Admiralty with Regards to Inquiries on the History of HM Victualling Yard and Deptford Dock by Arthur John Deakin. Dated 1861. Hand Written and Signed Letter by Writer Hugh Conway. Dated 1884. HM Victualling Yard, Deptford was a Royal Navy Victualling Yard established alongside Deptford Royal Dockyard on the River Thames. There was victualling activity on the site for the best part of 300 years from the mid-17th century through to the early 1960s.nPreviously known as the Red House, Deptford, the site with its wharf and storehouses was taken over by the Victualling Commissioners in 1743 to serve as their main operational facility. Rebuilt in the late 18th century, it soon became 'the largest food-processing operation in Britain, if not in Europe'. After 1858 it was formally known as the Royal Victoria Victualling Yard. Deptford's proximity to the food markets of London made it especially convenient for victualling, and it served the requirements not only of its own neighbouring Dockyard but also those of Woolwich, Sheerness and Chatham, as well as of the fleet and vessels based in the Nore (which was one of the Navy's principal anchorages).[2] In addition, it routinely supplied the other naval victualling yards, both at home and abroad, with items of stock (to supplement those sourced or produced locally) ranging from rum, food and tobacco to clothing and medical supplies. Size of letters are is 315mm x 200mm and 225mm x 188mm. Folding centre crease. More images can be taken upon request. Ref18423. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. 8vo. pp. viii, [2], [307]-504. with half-title. 5 engraved plates. (some foxing to plates). original cloth-backed bds. with paper spine label (spine faded, label & ends chipped & frayed). Inscribed from Daniel E.Moran to W.P.Kimball, 1936, with Kimball's bookplate & an inserted letter (see below). Hodgkinson's work was published as a second part to the fourth edition of Tredgold's Practical Essay On The Strength Of Cast Iron And Other Metals (1842), which Hodgkinson edited, but it is frequently offered on its own. Hodgkinson's experiments established his reputation as an authority on the strength of materials, and led to his election in 1841 to the Royal Society, which awarded him its Royal Medal the same year. In 1847 he was appointed professor of mechanical engineering at University College, London. As a consultant, he collaborated with Robert Stephenson and William Fairbairn on the design of the Britannia and Conway tubular bridges, and from 1847 to 1849 he served as a member of the Royal Commission on the application of iron to railway structures. The inserted one-page letter is addressed by Moran to Mogensen, asking that his friend, Mr. W.P.Kimball, Asst. Professor of Civil Engineering at Dartmouth, be allowed to inspect a modern cement mill.
