Hardcover. First Edition. Numerous remarkably fine engravings of insect life and habitat done specially for the English edition by Giacomelli. All edges gilt. A few minor bumps and spine darkened, but the decorative gilt on the covers bright and beautiful. A still tightly bound, copy. Tipped in is a letter, dated (Oct 24th 1880) from William Nelson the publisher of the book (following his father Thomas) thanking Edward Dalziel for a gift of an early copy of the Dalziel's "The Bible Gallery" with fulsome praise Dalziel's art work. There is a black border around the letter suggesting a recent death in his family. The Dalziel Brothers were the most important wood engraving firm of the 1860s and 1870s. Edward was the second brother to join after the founder George. Edward Dalziel's signature is on the title page. Edward's dazzling circular blue bookplate is pasted to the front paste down. Signed by Author.
