In a contemporary half roan binding with marbled paper boards. Fourth edition. Illustrat…ed with an extra colour pictorial title and twenty-nine double page coloured plates by J. B., J. Stewart, and others. Plates xii, xv, and xxi, misbound, with the other half of the double page plates bound in elsewhere. Collated, complete. A lively and accessible introduction to zoology for younger readers, combining descriptions of mammals, birds, reptiles, and marine creatures with vivid natural history scenes. Adam White (1817-1878) was a Scottish zoologist, Fellow of the Linnean Society, and entomologist who worked in the Zoological Department of the British Museum, where he specialised in insects and crustacea. In a contemporary half roan binding with marbled paper boards.Rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in slight loss to road. Rubbing to boards with loss to paper. Slight cracking to extremities of joints with slight lifting to backstrip at head of spine. Slight loss to tail of spine. Creasing to spine. Slight splaying to boards. Previous owner"s bookplate and ink inscription to the front pastedown, partially obscured by remnants of paper formerly laid down over the bookplate and now removed. Creasing to endpapers with the odd small tear and chip to gutters and fore edge. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with the odd light spot. The odd closed tear and chip to margins of plates, not affecting the images. Slight loss to plates xx and xxix, only slightly affecting the image. Plates XII, XV, and XXI misbound, with the remaining halves of the double-page plates bound elsewhere. Tape repairs to verso of plates i, xiii, xxii, xxiv, and xxix. Good. J. B, J. FIRST EDITION, folio, pp. 22, [2] + 31 double-page hand-coloured plates. Original green paper lithographed and hand-coloured pictorial boards, ads to pastedowns, pink flyleaves. Some toning and spotting. Boards dustsoiled, binding shaken but joints holding. Contemporary ink ownership inscription of ?Misses Isabella Anne Drummond…? to front flyleaf. The first edition of this exquisitely colourful survey of plants and their uses with text by the prolific English novelist Charlotte Mary Yonge (1823-1901). It features thirty-one double pages of hand-coloured plates arranged by Haddington-born Robert Mackenzie Stark (1815-1873) who worked as a nurseryman in Edinburgh and also as a seed merchant. The illustrations cover 138 plant categorised into seasonal flowers, kitchen vegetable and roots, plants useful in domestic economy, forage or field plants, grains, poisonous plants, British fungi, and fruits. With eleven plates devoted to poisonous plants, it?s safe to assume these were designed to instruct children to avoid these plants when playing outdoors. It is rare to find in original boards complete with all 31 plates, and there are no copies currently on the market.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Small folio. Pictorial title page in colour followed by 107 full-page coloured illustrations finished by hand, a book on natural history for the nursery. Linen backed throughout, foxed, occasionally severe, many plates thumbed, two plates damaged, numbering irregular, recent good quality half Morocco,… colours bright. Pictures show various animals, birds and so on suitable for teaching very young children. No date, but presumably some time in the later nineteenth century. There appear to have volumes on different themes issued by Edmonston, presumably this is a composite drawn on several, with a single title page. A used item, but one now nicely bound.
