Add to basketAuthor's Autograph Edition, number 596 of 1,000 copies signed by Lindbergh; fresh in the publisher's glassine and box. Lindbergh's first book, We was published in the same year he became the first person to complete a solo non-stop transatlantic flight, instantly making him one of the greatest aviators of the century. The mission was proposed in 1919 by hotelier Raymond Orteig, who offered $25,000 to the first person to finish his challenge. "Flying alone in hisSpirit of St. Louisthrough clouds, icing, storms, and sleepiness, Lindbergh traveled from New York to Paris in thirty-three hours and thirty minutes. He landed at night to claim the prize before an enthusiastic crowd of 100,000 cheering Frenchmen at Le Bourget Aerodrome" (ANB). Lindbergh became determined to write his life story himself after the reporter Carlyle MacDonald had composed an initial draft of the book in Lindbergh's first-person voice. According to Quentin Reynolds, "Lindbergh writes as well as he flies". The publisher, George Palmer Putnam, had a special interest in aviation; the following year, he became Amelia Earhart's public relations manager, and they married in 1931. Loosely inserted is the publisher's flyer and three-page pamphlet. Quentin Reynolds, "The Bold Victory of a Man Alone", New York Times, 20 May 1927. Large octavo. Etched frontispiece, with tissue guard, 51 plates, the majority photographic half-tones. Title page printed in orange and black. Original japon-backed light brown paper boards, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, pictorial pastedowns, edges untrimmed. With original glassine dust jacket and publisher's blue box. A fine, crisp copy; glassine a little chipped and with couple of short closed tears, box with occasional rubbing and one split corner, both still very well-preserved.
