Issued in conjunction with a 2012 exhibition featuring "239 paintings, sculptures, prints, ceramics, and lacquers from the seventeenth through the early twentieth centuries drawn exclusively from the Lowe Art Museum's permanent collection. . A variety of themes are addressed: the influence of China and Korea on Japan during this crucial timeframe; the role of the artist and pupil and the close association with other artists and patrons; the Japanese life-style and belief structure; and the impact of the West. The exhibition is divided into two sections, the Edo Period (1615-1868) and the Meiji Period (1868-1912). Each section is further subdivided into four parts, including nature, urban life, history/myth, and travel, which are also arranged chronologically." (foreword).
