It also chronicles the history of whaling off Ireland from Viking times, including the hunting of right fin whales in Donegal Bay in the 1700s( and the first successful use of haprpoon gun) and operations off the Mayo coast at the beginning of the twentieth century in which nearly 900 of the great whales were killed. Amongst other highlights are; medieval lawsuit over a dead whale, how a school of 'turley hides' relieved a amine in Dublin, a collision with a liner near Cork, mass strandings and whales in Irish folklore and archaeology. A scarce book especially in this condition. 218pp with illustrations.
