Previously little known to the public prior to the publication of "Ironweed," Kennedy went on to become the winner of the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the 1983 National Book Critics Circle Award. Rumor has it that a near dozen rejection slips hounded the novel, leading famed writer Saul Bellow to advocate for publication of "Ironweed." A Great Depression novel that follows Francis Phelan, unfortunate bum, alcoholic and murderer, as the prodigal son after a long 22 year absence, over the course of three holy days. William Kennedy's interviews about the value of the writing process can be found in "Conversations with William Kennedy," edited by Neila C. Seshachari, and includes one of Kennedy's moving statements about the process: "You're inventing out of a confluence of known facts and random ideasjuxtaposing reality and abstractions, and then wham! You've got something brand new in your head, and on the page. You're functioning on a plane of existence you didn't know was possible. That's creation, and it's profound pleasure. It's what you live for.".
