David Smiley tells his story modestly, but it is to its readers it's a story of extraordinary nerve and physical resilience.In 1940 he went with his regiment to the Middle East and served with it in campaigns in Iraq, Persia, Syria and the Western Desert, following which he was recruited by the SOE and served in Albania and later Thailand, then Siam where he was responsible at the end of the war for opening up a Japanese prisoner of War camp. He was awarded the MC and Bar for his activities in Albania as welll as a Croix d Guerre. He was seconded to M16 in 1948 but, it subsequently emerged, was betrayed when in Albania to the communists by Philby.
