Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - TO THE READERWhen I first learned to read by sounding out words I realized, to my horror, that one of the pictures in my children's Bible was a story about a father who, out of obedience to God, was ready to sacrifice his son. That story of Abraham and Isaac terrified me. Later, the atrocities of WWII and the treachery of Moscovite dictatorship in Hungary focused my attention over and over again on the question of the origins of human cruelty. This led me back to the story of Abraham and Isaac, and finally to the crucial question of whether Abraham wanted to kill his son because he had heard the voice of God, or had heard the voice of God because he wanted to kill his son. The more I thought about it the more convinced I became that finding an answer might go a long way toward freeing us from a godhead that makes Abraham's unquestioned obedience acceptable or even commendable as a virtue. My novel is a dramatization of these underlying concepts, all within the context of the lives and times of Abraham and Isaac. LZBABOUT THE AUTHORIf fate - namely the 1956 revolution in Hungary - had not intervened, Laszlo Z. Bito (1934-2021) would have become a writer of fiction, as clearly indicated by his notes from the coal mine to which he was consigned by the Soviet overlords. Because of his involvement as a local organizer of the revolution he had to flee the country, and upon his subsequent arrival in the United States as an immigrant without knowledge of English he needed to choose a more practical career. After graduating with a BA in chemistry and biology from Bard College he decided on biomedical research, achieved a PhD in biophysics and cell biology from Columbia University in 1963, and joined the Ophthalmology faculty of that university in 1965. This led to the development of the drug Xalatan, which has been for many years the gold standard in the treatment of glaucoma. At the age of 63 he retired from science to devote himself to the long-delayed writing of fiction and essays. By the time of his death, he had published more than twenty books in Hungarian, some in two editions, some with translations into German and several Eastern European languages. His literary work included six biblical novels. The Gospel of Anonymous, released in 2011, marked the first of those novels published in English, followed by Eden Revisited (2022).

Crowninshield; Additional material signed (in print) John Heath, I. Chauncey, O.H. Perry. Oliver Hazard Perry (1785 1819) was an American naval commander, born in Rhode Island. Oliver was the best-known and most prominent member of the Perry family naval dynasty, and he was older brother of Commodore Matthew C. Perry. Perry served in the West Indies during the Quasi War of 17981800 against France, in the Mediterranean during the Barbary Wars of 18011815, and in the Caribbean fighting piracy and the slave trade, but is most noted for his heroic role in the War of 1812 during the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie. For leading American forces in a decisive naval victory at the Battle of Lake Erie, Perrry received a Congressional Gold Medal and the Thanks of Congress. For Perry, the post-war years were marred by controversies. In 1815, he commanded Java in the Mediterranean during the Second Barbary War. While moored in Naples, Perry slapped the commander of the ship's Marines, Captain John Heath, whom Perry considered incompetent and insubordinate. The ensuing court-martial found both men guilty, but levied only mild reprimands. After the crew returned home, Heath challenged Perry to a pistol duel, which was fought on October 19, 1817, on the same field in Weehawken, New Jersey where Aaron Burr shot and killed Alexander Hamilton. Heath fired first and missed. Perry declined to return fire, satisfying the Marine's honor.

First edition, House Doc. 66. 8vo. 34 pp. With the ownership signature of Henry St. George Tucker at the head of the title page; Tucker (1780-1848; jurist, U.S. Congressman, 1815-1819) is best known for a trio of legal treatises, Commentaries of the Laws of Virginia (1836-1837), Lectures on Constitutional Law (1843), and A Few Lectures on Natural Law (1844). He lived in Winchester, Virginia, most of his adult life, heading a private law school there, and served as head of the Virginia Court of Appeals, 1831-1841, and as professor of law at the University of Virginia, 1841-1845. Facing the title page is written enigmatically, probably in another hand, "For the Winchester Triumvirate. Bound behind: (MONROE, James) Message from the President of the United States, Transmitting the Correspondence between the Department of State, and the Spanish Minister, Residing Here, Shewing the Present State of the Relations between the Two Governments. Washington, (DC): Printed by E. De Krafft, 1818. First edition, House Doc. 155. 8vo. 91 pp. Text block browned, else very good. Contemporaryhalf-sheep and patterned boards (rubbed), gilt rules on spine. (#6366). Perry, the War of 1812 naval hero, clashed with the marine captain while serving as commander of the Java on a Mediterranean cruise. The court martial, reported here, resulted in a reprimand for both officers and a later duel between the pair that resulted in no injuries. The second pamphlet reports on progress between the United States and Spain as negotiations toward the cession of Florida were conducted by John Quincy Adams and Luis de Onis. Though various members of the Tucker family possessed large libraries, books owned by them are uncommon in trade.
