First French edition, first printing, of Berberova's intimate and revelatory record of Russian émigré life and interactions with the leading literary figures, among them Nabokov, Gorky, Pasternak, Bunin, Akamatova, and Bely. Warmly inscribed by the author to Jacqueline Kennedy: "A Madame Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis avec mon respect et mon admiration. Nina Berberova. Princeton. 27 Mars 1990." "In her autobiography Berberova appears as a powerful creator of herself, a woman who, despite the tremendous odds of history and personal fate, managed to preserve and nurture her intellectual and personal independence, to write the story of her age, and to impart her prodigious knowledge of Russia Abroad to a select number of bright and ambitious American scholars. Her capturing of the vanishing world of the first wave of the Russian emigration adds weight and historical significance to Berberova's very personal account" (Peterson, p. 494). First published in English in 1969, her memoir had to wait until 1972 before a Russian version, and that published in Munich. Peterson notes that "Patricia Blake's negative review in the New York Times shortly after the publication of the English translation slowed the process [of transmission] perhaps (only a little over a thousand copies were sold) but did not ultimately prevent the book from reaching many American readers, including such celebrities as Jackie Onassis, whose letter of appreciation is preserved in Berberova's archive at Yale". Nadya L. Peterson, "The Private 'I' in the Works of Nina Berberova", Slavic Review, 60, 3, Fall 2001. Octavo. Original printed wrappers. A little light rubbing on the wrappers, else about fine.
