Two works octavo, with numerous engravings, after Turner, Stothard and Prout, sumptuously bound to match; full polished calf, spines ornately gilt with crimson spine-labels, magenta endpapers, gilt dentelles, edges fully gilt, by Tout. A beautiful set in a superb binding by Tout. Two works by Samuel Rogers (1763-1855): Italy and Poems. These illustrated editions were a major success for Rogers who was in the same literary circle as his now more famous friends Wordsworth, Coleridge and Byron. Both volumes are for the most part odes to Italy and the taste for the "grand tour", Rogers having visited Italy and the Continent with his sister in 1814 and later in 1822. Out of these tours arose his last and longest work, Italy. It was at first a failure, but Rogers was determined to make it a success. He enlarged and revised the poem, and commissioned illustrations from J.M.W. Turner, Thomas Stothard and Samuel Prout. These were engraved on steel in the sumptuous edition of 1830. The book then proved a great success, and Rogers followed it up with an equally sumptuous edition of his Poems (1834). In 1850, on Wordsworth's death, Rogers was asked to succeed him as poet laureate, but declined the honour on account of his age. Inheriting wealth, Rogers was a noted art collector and patron, and at his home in St James's place he hosted all the celebrities of London. . Provenance: Sir Mervyn Lloyd Peel K.B.E. (1856-1929) of Danvrallt, Carmarthenshire, with his armorial bookplate.

Each person has signed their names. Three bound up volumes namely Italy a Poem by Samuel Rogers, The Poetical Works of Thomas Campbelland and Fugitive Verses by Joanna Baillie. Grace Croft was the daughter of Sir Thomas Croft and Sophia Anne Lateward. Both Joanna Baillie and Samuel Rogers were Poets and friends. Book is very good and quite bright. Gilt a little dull. Leather lightly marked in places. Light edge rubbing. Contents good. Ref 17397. Signed by Author(s).

Rogers visited Italy for the first time in 1814, and it was during this trip that he envisioned the concept for his famous poem. The first edition part I published in 1821 and part II in 1828 was not well received; therefore, Rogers engaged Thomas Stothard and J. M. W. Turner to illustrate a new luxury publication (the present one), regarded as "one of the outstanding examples of the illustrated book in the first half of the nineteenth century" (ODNB). Stothard's figure scenes in this volume are considered "perhaps the climax" of his illustration, and Turner's landscapes are "his first outstanding success with steel. The success of Italy persuaded Rogers to undertake a similar costly edition of his Poems which was published in 1834 with thirty-three vignettes after Turner. Turner - himself a writer of poetry and clearly very sympathetic to that of Samuel Rogers - created some of his most telling images for these two beautiful books, which established him as the leading illustrator of the day" (ibid.). 2 works, small quarto (204 x 132 mm). Late 19th-century red crushed morocco by Rivière, spines with raised bands, gilt lettering and intricate floral decoration in compartments, covers, board edges, and turn-ins bordered with gilt fillets and floral tools, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Armorial bookplate of Henry David Leonard George Walston, Baron Walston (1912-1991), British agricultural researcher and politician, with manuscript initials J. S., to front pastedowns. Spines very slightly toned, some offsetting from the illustrations, occasional marks to contents, but generally clean. A near-fine set, sharp and well-margined.
