Burnside, having fruitlessly thrown division after division of the flower of his army into the fire on the heights of Fredericksburg, had retired to count his dead, and eventually to be relieved of his command. Lee and Jackson behind their breastworks, thanking God for the repulse of the enemy, waited vainly for Burnside to make another attack, and there was a temporary lull in hostilities." Burgundy rippled paper covered card box with slide lid, label card stuck down on front Little Jack Horner with black lettering. 51 cards lacking 1, colour nursery characters each card in 13 sets of 4, red playing card backs with rounded corners. Box : slight snags lid at side edges, slight marks label else very clean with good shape. Cards : many are creased though clean. Very creased cards in quite attractive box, perhaps only the box and replacement odd cards are useful. VG/G+ box & cards.

Tall thin 8vo., card wraps with integrated red wrapper, printed in black with vignette and decorative borders to covers; outer edges untrimmed; together with the vibrant printed poster (folded as issued, extending to 25" x 40"); The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition ; a little creased and pushed at edges, small dark mark to the foot of spine; some light scattered foxing, mostly affecting the outer edge and prelims; Ex Libris plate of T. V. Scudamore to the front blank end-paper ; The POSTER is in excellent condition, clean, bright and unmarked, just a couple of nicks and creases at edges. Both the book and poster are protected in removable Mylar covers. First UK edition, with the errata slip present to title, as called for. A wonderful copy of this scarce play, complete with the fantastic original poster, published by the Curwen Press, entitled 'By Underground for Pleasure, whether for Country Joys or Stage Fancies'. Designed as a London Transport poster, the idea was originally conceived of by C. Lovat Fraser, who passed away in 1921, and commissioned by the London Transport publicity officer Frank Pick, to encourage the use of trains outside peak hours in a bid to increase passenger numbers. Packed full of heroes and heroines, stage backdrops, and fairytale characters as diverse as Cinderella, Mother Hubbard, Jack Horner, Little Red Riding Hood and Robinson Crusoe, it was published together with the play, describing how the characters are able to defeat Demon Delay and reach the theatre in time for the pantomime. With the idea being to cut out the characters and backdrops in order for children to make their very own 'Toy Theatre', the poster came with the play ready to be performed in the makeshift setting. Paperback published by Wells Gardner, Darton and Co. in London in 1922. Front cover is worn, torn and chipped along edges, ends of spine are worn and have some tearing, and covers have some scuffing. Red wrappers with black lettering and designs. Inside front cover has a bookplate from a previous owner. Title page has a handwritten date of 1922 at bottom. Some pages in book have creases on top edge from where a paper clip was used as a bookmark. Side and bottom edges of pages have irregular cuts from the publisher. Text block is in good condition. Some pages have some soiling and slight wrinkling along bottom edges. Front cover has a pouch to store the chart and letter, and top edge of it is torn. The enclosed color poster has some tears along some creases and some tanning on back, and is in good condition. Also included is a torn out advertisement for the book by a bookseller, with a handwritten date on the edge. Book is in good condition. 63 pages, .6 lb.; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 63 pages.
