Binding is good and tight, with some very minor toning to tan paper. The book is slightly shelf-cocked while at rest, but seems as though it would slide back to square if it were on a proper shelf. Pictorial DJ is attractive, but there are bumps and curls to the top edge and some wear to the hinges. On inside flap, both top and bottom corners are clipped, so there is no sign of the original price. There is NO MENTION of the Newbery Medal (which this book won in 1981), so this copy was clearly out and in circulation before it won the award. DJ now protected in mylar. No date on title page. Copyright page dated 1980. Stated First Edition with number line 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10. 216 pages. Signed on the title page, "To Helen Foster with love, Katherine Paterson. 11/22/80." Overall, this copy has clearly been read and re-read, which is what the author would want, but not necessarily what a collector a Newbery firsts seeks out.
