Condition: Good. Original B&W sepia-toned photograph issued as a postcard. 5.5 x 3.5 inches. Very Good+. Printed on verso: "Film-Kurier" Series, 10, Banner St., London, E.C.1. Made in Great Britain. Signed in the plate.James Francis Cagney Jr. (July 17, 1899 - March 30, 1986) was an American actor and dancer on stage and in film. Known for his consistently energetic performances, distinctive vocal style, and deadpan comic timing, he won acclaim and major awards for a wide variety of performances. He is remembered for playing multifaceted tough guys in films such as The Public Enemy (1931), Taxi! (1932), Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), The Roaring Twenties (1939) and White Heat (1949), finding himself typecast or limited by this reputation earlier in his career. He was able to negotiate dancing opportunities in his films and ended up winning the Academy Award for his role in the musical Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942). In 1999 the American Film Institute ranked him eighth among its list of greatest male stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Orson Welles described Cagney as "maybe the greatest actor who ever appeared in front of a camera".

No Binding. Condition: Good. DESCIPTION: A desirable matched James Cagney autograph pair comprising: 1- A vintage black-and-white studio portrait photograph of James Cagney, inscribed in ink, "To Anne Giardin, my sincere thanks and best wishes, James Cagney." Image bears a studio / negative code at lower right ("W.C.-8600-28.98," as visible). 7.5 x 9.5 inches. 2- A one-page typed letter signed, on "James Cagney / Beverly Hills, California" letterhead, dated November 18th, 1943, addressed to "Miss Anne Giardin, 737 Prior Street, Vancouver, B.C." In the letter Cagney apologizes for the delayed reply, explains that her earlier scrapbook had lacked an address, and states: "Under separate cover I am sending along the autographed photo you requested." Signed in brown ink, "James Cagney." 7.5 x 9.5 inches. A particularly attractive and marketable association piece, the letter explicitly authenticates the sending of the signed photograph to the named recipient. An excellent example of wartime-era Hollywood fan correspondence from one of the great stars of classic American cinema. Addressed to Miss Anne Giardin of 737 Prior Street, Vancouver, B.C.; the uncommon surname and surviving British Columbia records suggest she belonged to the long-established Giardin family of Vancouver's Prior Street / Strathcona district. CONDITION: Both items very good overall, with moderate age toning and light handling wear. Photograph with mild surface wear, a few trivial marks, and one small area of emulsion loss/surface abrasion to the dark jacket area; inscription bold and clearly legible. Letter with expected fold traces, light toning, and minor creasing/handling wear; signature strong. Versos blank apart from faint show-through/offsetting and light age evidence. A sound, attractive pair. NOTE: The signatures compare favourably in overall style with accepted James Cagney examples seen through established autograph-market sources. The matched content of the 1943 letter and photo materially supports the plausibility of the pair. Nevertheless, the group is offered without independent third-party authentication. Although he won acclaim and major awards for a wide variety of roles, he is best remembered for playing 'tough guys.' In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked him eighth among the Greatest Male Stars of All Time. For his first performing role, he danced dressed as a woman in the chorus line of the 1919 revue Every Sailor. After several years in vaudeville, Cagney continued as a hoofer and comedian until his first major acting role in 1925. He secured several other roles, receiving good reviews before landing the lead role the 1929 play Penny Arcade. After rave reviews for his acting, Warners signed him on an initial $500 a week, three week contract to reprise his role, which was quickly extended to a seven year contract. Cagney's seventh film, The Public Enemy, became one of the most influential gangster movies of the period. Notable for its famous grapefruit scene, the film thrust Cagney into the spotlight, making him one of Warners' and Hollywood's biggest stars. 180 pp. Englisch.
