Copnsiders the ltierary forgeries of Macpherson and Chatterton in terms of the important 18th centu…ry debate about the validity of using literature as a hisotrical source. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. unkEdition: Undated but 1884. 16mo green printed stapled wrappers, edge chipping, closed cover tear, spine wear, front cover reattached, spotting, stains ow G: [4]+132pp Entertaining volume on five infamous literary imposters--'Chatterton and the Rowley Poems'; 'Macpherson's Poems o…f Ossian'; 'The Shakspeare Forgery'; 'Psalmanazar and the Formosa Imposture'; and 'Bentley and the Epistles of Phalaris'. Henry Riddell Montgomery (1818-1904) Irish newspaper owner, was the author who is described on the title-page as 'Author of "Memoirs of Sir R. Steele and his Contemporaries;" "Thomas Moore: his Life and Writings;" "Bickerstaff Illustrated." &c.'. A Scarce title. (COPAC only lists copies at the British Library and National Library of Scotland)./The original Epistles of Phalaris were said to have been written by Phalaris, tyrant of Acragas, Sicily, from c. 570 554 BC. In his 1699 dissertation, English scholar Richard Bentley attacked the authenticity of the letters and declared that they were written much later, possibly by Adrianus of Tyre in the first century AD. He argued that certain cities mentioned in the letters were not founded during the lifetime of Phalaris, therefore the letters could not have been written by him. Today the author of the letters has become known as Pseudo-Phalaris by most scholars./The "Thomas Rowley" poems of Thomas Chatterton (175270), which the youthful author attempted to pass off as the work of a medieval cleric.Thomas Chatterton (1752-1770). Poems, Supposed to Have Been Written at Bristol, by Thomas Rowley, and Others, in the Fifteenth Century. London: T. Payne and Son, 1778. writers who forged literary works as a means to advance their own career, as was the case of the eighteenth-century English poet Thomas Chatterton. In the muniment room of St. Mary Redcliff Church, Bristol, Chatterton found two boxes containing medieval manuscripts that once belonged to his father. The discovery of these manuscripts provided Chatterton with the main inspiration, and even with a suitable model, to compose "medieval poetry". In fact, he created an entire fictional fifteenth-century world around an imaginary monk and author, Thomas Rowley, who, according to Chatterton, was at different times a priest, a poet, and an antiquarian. Moreover, he added the real historical figure of William Canynge, five-time mayor of Bristol, whom Rowley supposedly served as a biographer and literary agent. But this intelligent plan would not have initially succeeded without careful research. Chatterton examined medieval manuscripts not only from St. Mary Redcliff Church but also from local libraries and bookstores in order to create a fifteenth-century hand. He consulted medieval glossaries and etymological dictionaries to fabricate what he erroneously thought was a version of fifteenth-century Englishhis medieval vocabulary included some 1,800 words. More dramatically, he did not hesitate to manufacture manuscripts that looked old by rubbing the parchment with dirt or dying it with tea. If he didn't produce a manuscript, he simply claimed that the poems in question had been copied from an original version that existed elsewhere (Grafton, 1990: 50-3; Rosenblum, 2000: 57-105)./The Ireland Shakespeare forgeries were a cause célèbre in 1790s London, when author Samuel Ireland announced the discovery of a treasure-trove of Shakespearean manuscripts by his son William Henry Ireland. Among them were the manuscripts of four plays, two of them previously unknown. such respected literary figures as James Boswell pronounced them genuine, as did various antiquarian experts. Sheridan agreed to present one of the newly discovered plays. Excitement over the significance of the find turned to acrimony when Edmond Malone, the great Shakespeare scholar, conclusively showed that the language, orthography, and handwriting were faked; William Ireland, the supposed discoverer, then confessed to the fraud.

Contact seller5-star sellerFirst Edition. 4to, [16], [i]-xvi, 1-270pp; full contemporary calf. A nice copy of the first edition of the greatest literary hoax of the 18th century. Although suspicions about MacPherson's authorship were almost immediate -- most notably from Samuel Johnson -- many readers were taken in by his purported discovery of ancient Ga…elic manuscripts. The poems of Ossian became a sensation throughout Europe and found enthusiastic admirers, including most famously, Goethe and Napoleon. The poems were reprinted many times and exerted a significant influence upon the development of Romantic literature. Light even toning and some wrinkling to pages; a few marks on endsheets; covers rubbed with the beginning of wear to hinges, which are still sound.
