Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. "The Passion of Dracula" theatre programme, signed by all of the cast: Richard Vernon, George Chakiris, Richard Moore, Roy Dotrice, Geraldine James, James Villiers, Michael Feast, Beth Morris and Tom Marshall. The theatre programme is from November 1978. The play premiered in the UK… in 1978 at Queen's Theatre, London with this cast, so this theatre programme would appear to be from an early showing. These are genuine autographs, this is not a photocopy or preprint. Condition: Slight browning, otherwise tidy. Provenance: This came direct from the Jan van Bree estate. Jan van Bree (1938-2024) was a Dutch native and a prolific autograph collector. His collection spanned around fifty albums. It began in 1957 when he wrote to the famous Italian singer Beniamino Gigli and received a handwritten reply. That one letter spurred Jan to write to as many famous people as possible, all over the world and to collect autographs in person. Signed by Author(s).

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. A superb collection of twenty original etchings. A very rare book in this format - WorldCat records just three copies in world libraries - two in London libraries and one in the US. [See bibliographical note at end for further details.] 20 unnumbered leaves of original etched plate…s, each signed in the plate, tipped onto thick paper leaves and each with its own window mount overlaying the mount. Title page, list of etchings and separate letterpress leaf printed in black and red for each plate. Original olive green cloth with bevelled edges to the boards, title to the front board and spine, a little general wear, cloth rubbed to spine ends and corners, small nick to the centre of the spine, light stain to front board. Original gold-patterned end papers, contents very good, a little spotting to the first and last few letterpress pages; plates very good and clean. Plates as follows: - November by Stephen Parrish -- Ophelia by Anna Lea Merritt -- New York Bay by Henry Farrer -- A Philadelphia beauty by Stephen J. Ferris, after Gilbert Stuart -- The Saco River valley by W. Wellstood, after George Inness -- The mermaid by F.S. Church -- Noonday rest by Peter Moran -- Near Mattakeese by Edmund H. Garrett -- The Wayside Inn, Sudbury, Mass. by Edmund H. Garrett -- The king's Jester by Paul Lerat, after F.B. Mayer -- Old house at Stroudwater, Me. by C.F. Kimball -- Morning by Thomas Moran -- A Burro Train in New Mexico by Peter Moran -- Mischief by I.M. Gaugengigl -- The prophet Elijah by Kimberly, after Washington Allston -- On the Housatonic by Kruseman Van Elten -- Schwabelweiss by Otto H. Bacher -- Old cedars on the coast of Maine by James D. Smillie -- Landscape with sheep by Dames D. Smillie, from Charles E mile Jacque. A very good copy of this rare collection of original etchings. [Bibliographical note. This appears to be essentially the same book and collection of plates as "TWENTY AMERICAN ETCHINGS Original and Reproductive" published by Nims and Knight, Troy, NY also in 1887, this Strahan edition presumably being produced for the British market. To confuse matters further the previous year i.e.in 1886 a book of very similar title 'American Etchings: A Collection of Twenty Original Etchings' also with text by Koehler was published in Boston: by Estes and Lauriat and University Press: John Wilson and Son, Cambridge. However this earlier collection had a completely different suite of etchings by different artists.] Size: Folio - (44 x 32 cm). Book.

Contact seller5-star sellerA stock certificate representing three shares in the disastrous North American Land Company, signed by Robert Morris as president and James Marshall as secretary. Dr. Enoch Edwards, the purchaser of these shares, was a quietly significant figure in the founding of America. A surgeon by trade, he was attending physician to George… Washington during the war, a member of the 1776 Provincial Congress of Pennsylvania, and a signatory of the 1790 Pennsylvania Constitution. His work and social circles brought him into friendly contact with many of the Revolution's luminaries, and it is said that the signers of the Declaration dined at his summer home in Philadelphia on that very day. After substantial personal contributions to the Revolution and pledging his personal credit in support of the insolvent Confederation, Robert Morris was eager for new private ventures. Along with John Nicolson and John Greenleaf, he organized the North American Land Company, the largest land trust in America. The company quickly collected six million acres in New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Kentucky, and Washington, DC. Substantially overextended and discovering most of the land they purchased was barren, the company was also seriously hurt by Greenleaf's dishonest use of company funds, which ultimately led to its collapse. His resources now utterly exhausted, Morris spent a year in debtors' prison before being released in the wake of the passage of federal bankruptcy law in 1801. Nicolson would die there in 1800, before the new law was passed. This document is also signed by Morris' son-in-law, James Marshall (brother of John Marshall), best remembered for negotiating the release of Lafayette on behalf of Washington. The transfer of the shares was approved and signed by Marshall and Morris on April 18, 1795, and the shares are numbered 16246 to 16248. Important evidence of early American land speculation, bought into by an important figure of the Revolution, and signed by a signer of the Declaration and the savior of America's credit. Engraved form, accomplished in manuscript, 9¾ × 12½ inches. Scalloped left edge with small closed tear. Scattered staining, small bit of paper loss from ink corrosion in the ascender of the "R" in Robert Morris's signature. Good plus.

Contact seller4-star sellerSedgwick, Adam (1785-1873). Two autograph letters signed to [James] Marshall. Dent [Yorkshire], Oct. 7, 1857; Trinity College [Cambridge], Oct. 31, 1857. 8pp. total. 186 x 113 mm. Light soiling along folds, but very good. Letters with excellent scientific content from one of the founders of modern geology. Sedgwick was responsib…le for defining the Devonian and Cambrian ages in the geological time scale, and his immensely popular lecture courses on geology, delivered annually at Cambridge between 1819 and 1870, had an enormous influence on succeeding generations of English geologists. One of his students was Charles Darwin, who began attending Sedgwick's lectures in January 1831 and accompanied Sedgwick on a geological field tour of Wales the following summer. The two men remained friends until Sedgwick's death, even though Sedgwick was never able to accept Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. IIn his Oct. 7 letter to Marshall, Sedgwick discusses the geological researches he was then undertaking in England's Lake District: "I mean D.V. to work my way to Ulverston; & on Saturday or possibly Monday to transfer my head quarters to Broughton. I want to connect our work in all quarries on the east side of the road, with the great open quarries in the Ireleth country; which we failed to do. The beds in the great open quarries strike very differently from those you & I saw; yet the strike of the cleavage (?) is unchanged in direction & from end to end almost perpendicular--I think it highly probable that the bed between the Ireleth slate & the Ulverston estuary are nearly all from the flag or flag & grit--And I suspect that some hard gritty ridges I remember to have seen in a part of Cartmell Fell, are but a repetition (by enormous fault) of the Comiston grits. . . ." Sedgwick also notes his intention to "hear Dr. Livingstone's evening lecture"; this is a reference to David Livingstone (1813-73), famous for his exploration of Africa. Sedgwick later provided a preface to Dr. Livingstone's Cambridge Lectures (1858). In his Oct. 31 letter, Sedgwick touches on his precarious health--"On Monday I ought to have begun my course of lectures but on that day I had a severe relapse of vertigo & was obliged to put off my lectures until Friday (yesterday)"--and continues his discussion of his work: "All the rocks from the Ireleth country to the Comiston Ulverston sands are Comiston flag--But in our final traverse we found the hard Comiston grits in the hills S. W. of Penny Bridge--just where they ought to be--I think there is an enormous break down the valley meeting the complicated faults (which come down from the hill a little North of Seathwaite) at an angle.--In short the country from Ireleth Moor inclusive, to the Sand of Ulverston, has had a shove southwards of about five miles!" The recipient of these letters, James Marshall, was an amateur geologist and Fellow of the Geological Society. A friend of both Sedgwick and John Herschel, Marshall was "a keen advocate of scientific education" (Briggs, Victorian Cities [1993], p. 161). Olroyd, Earth, Water, Ice and Fire (2002), p. 20. Dictionary of Scientific Biography. .
