Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Blue cloth, boards with with blindstamped patterns, spine in gilt, binding is faded but otherwise very good, 9 1/4 x 6 inches. Inscribed "Richard Fletcher, February 6, 1849. Present from Rev. Seth Bliss" on front end paper; old blue paper Fletcher Town Library bookplate accompanies. Engraving of Milnor by F. Halpin, "from a Daguerreotype." Hinge behind title page partly open and we think the stiffness of the paper of the engraving is the cause. Lithograph plate of St. George's Church and Rectory, by Wm. Endicott & Co. 646 generally clean pp. with the first and last several leaves in the book showing some foxing. This Memoir makes generous use of the letters and diaries of Dr. Milnor. It presents both the civil and religous aspects of his fruitful life.James Milnor, D.D. (1773-1844), born in Philadelphia, "a distinguished divine of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He studied for a while at the University of Pennsylvania, but about 1789 turned his attention to jurisprudence. His first settlement as a legal practitioner was at Norristown, but about 1797 he returned to Philadelphia where he married. Until then he had lived, as he had been educated, a Quaker; but, as he had not been trained to any great strictness in the customs of the Friends, and as his wife belonged to an Episcopal family, it cost him little sacrifice to change his denomination. In consequence of his marriage, he had, moreover, been in due form 'read out of meeting.' In 1805 Mr. Milnor was elected a member of the select council of Philadelphia for two years. In 1807 he was elected for three years to the same body; and in 1808 was raised to the presidency of the council for one year. In 1810 he was elected to the Congress of the United States, as a member of the House of Representatives, from the city and county of Philadelphia: his term there closed March 4, 1813Soon after the expiration of his term in Congress he removed to Norristown, where, while preparing himself to enter the ministry, he acted as lay-readerHe was ordained deacon in St. James's Church, Philadelphia, Aug. 14, 1814, and was admitted to the order of Presbyters in the same place Aug. 27, 1815He was made D.D. by the University of Pennsylvania in 1819. In 1830 he was sent to the British and Foreign Bible Society as a delegate of the American Bible Society, and of various other religious and benevolent institutions.Dr. Milnor was distinguished for his dignity and wisdom, and especially for his benevolence and piety. He ardently labored for the advancement of the kingdom of Christ, and his life is full of incident and instruction, 'alike attractive to the ardent youth, the man of business, the humble Christian, and the mature theologian.'" The Diary of Reverend James Newton provides a wealth of social history; the eighteenth century through the eyes of a well-to-do country parson. James Newton was rector of Nuneham Courtenay at a time of great change. He witnessed the destruction of the medieval village to make way for Lord Harcourt's new park in 1759, and both his parsonage and his church were destroyed and replaced. It has been suggested that Oliver Goldsmith based 'sweet Auburn' on Nuneham in his poem The Deserted Village. This diary provides the historical reality behind the literature. Newton chronicles life in the country with all its joys and tribulations. We have glimpses of his philosophy on life, his treatment of servants, his interest in gardening as well as his reactions to national events. Further interest is added by his regular visits to London, usually for a mixture of business and pleasure. He has tenants to check, his family house and sisters to visit, as well as wooing to be done in his continual quest for a wife. However, there is no evidence that he ever married. Long stays in Bath also feature and his descriptions of visits to the Assembly Room and the Pump Room give us an eye-witness account of the daily doings of polite society. His comments and observations during his journeys also merit attention, as indeed do his methods of travel. The difficulties and time taken in such undertakings become apparent. Ref X7.

Broadside. First Edition. Broadside, 13 x 7 inches. James Rector was an onlooker from a rooftop, watching the rioting concerning People's Park, May 15, 1969. After protesters on the roof of a nearby building threw bricks or sharpened pieces of metal at police, deputies of the Alameda County Sheriff fired buckshot at the people on the roof of the Telegraph Repertory Cinema. Rector was fatally injured. This is McClure's poem of protest in response to the incident at the height of 1960s countercultural upheaval. McClure's name is not to be found, nor any reference to year, publisher, printer, etc. The poem was later reprinted in his book 'September Blackberries'. First edition (first printing). Very good copy with slight foxing.

Raised bands on leather spine, along with a red and black label, both stamped with gilt lettering, respectively. Frontispiece engraving of Archbishop James Usher, Archbishop of Armagh (1580-1656). Engravings of each of these men accompany each of their sections, (Dr. Henry Hammond, (1605-1660); Bishop Thomas Wilson, (1663-1755), and John Evelyn, Esq. (1620-1706), verso the title page of their respective sections. 379 PP.QUOTE LISTED ON THE TITLE PAGE: by Jeremy Taylor: "Since good men while they are alive have their conversation in heaven, when they are in heaven it is also fit that they should in their good names live upon earth." EXCERPT FROM THE PREFACE: "The paths of good and pious men are commonly so full of peace, and the sorrows which befall them so mercifully softened and blessed by a sacred influence, that few more engaging or successful methods of recommending the fear and love of God have been discovered, than the circulation of religious biography. With the desire of promoting so good a cause, by the blessing of God, the writer has prepared this volume; and he hopes that he may have given a fresh interest to the Memoirs it contains, by the collation of former Lives of the individuals whose characters are delineated, and the addition of new matter gleaned from their own writings, as well as from many volumes of contemporary Biography and History."CONDITION: Front cover is detached, yet present. Back cover hinge is loose and bears an inner crack, exposing the thread and stitch-work, yet it is still attached. John Evelyn is the only engraving with protective tissue. All four engravings have offset onto their recto page, and some have bled through several pages verso and recto. The protective tissue in John Evelyn's section has been offset by the recto page's text. Leaves are mostly evenly toned with some foxing throughout, particularly at the front and back endpapers. Leaves are also quite sturdy and without creasing, except for pages 295-366 where the head has been slightly bumped. Pages 359-366 show the strongest evidence of this bump, with a near fold at the head. Binding is tight, and pages are fully legible and complete. Ex-libre bookplate from United Presbyterian College, Brown-Lindsay Library affixed to front pastedown. No marginalia or annotation. A fascinating piece of Christian leadership history. Full refund if not satisfied.
