Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 8vo; 8 pages; Clean and secure in original pictorial wrappers (reproduction of Jan Voss' "Letter from Porto Santo.") OCLC 1202248324 Five b&w illustrations. Printed on card stock. Jan Voss is a German painter best known for collaged works on canvas which incorporate rudimentary, fi…gure-like shapes and scrawling, painted lines. He tears, crumples, and glues paper to find the image for each work rather than having a plan in mind beforehand. Vossâs work has relationships to Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and CoBrA artists like Asger Jorn. Born on October 9, 1936 in Hamburg, Germany, the artist studied at the Munich Art Academy and moved to Paris in 1960, where he has remained ever since. Today, his works are in the collections of the Musà e dâArt Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Museum of Fine Arts in Dunkirk, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Voss lives and works in Gentilly, France. The Lefebre Gallery was established in 1960 by John and Ljuba Lefebre at 47 East 77th Street in Manhattan, New York. The galleryâs inaugural exhibition, âA Collector in Paris becomes an Art Dealer in New Yorkâ was based on the Lefebres' personal collection, which included artists who were part of The School of Paris in the 1950âs. As Annette Michelson noted in her introductory text for the exhibitionâs catalogue, â There is an idea of a gallery â"the almost ideal gallery- in which every painter represented, every painting, represents a personal taste, in which every canvas bears the mark of a private affection or of a passion (.) These canvases bear the stamp of a milieu (Paris), a period (the post war years) and a particular sensibility; all have matured together.â From this inaugural exhibition, the Lefebre Gallery established a reputation for mounting important exhibitions of post war European art. Lefebre was the only American art dealer to represent Cobra artists such as Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Carl-Henning Pedersen, and Reinhoud. Other artists represented by the Lefebre Gallery included Horst Antes, Pol Bury, Julius Bissier, Klaus Fussmann, Hans Hartung, Serge Polikoff, Antonio Segui, Wallasse Ting, among others.
