Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Green cloth covers with gilt lettering and decoration. Bumped spine ends and corners, slight fading to gilt lettering on the spine. 322 pages with Index. Illustrated with black and white plates (photos) and a large fold-out map of Canada (after page 318, fine condition). Association copy with a personalized inscription to Canadian author "Janey Canuck" (Emily Ferguson Murphy): "To Mrs. Arthur Murphy ("Janey Canuck") whose brilliant pen has invested her country with an atmosphere of enchantment - with unforgetting love of Lilian Whiting. The Brunswick (Whiting's residence), Boston, U.S.A. July, 1917." Murphy, like Whiting to a lesser extent, was a women's rights activist as well as an author. She was also the first female magistrate in Canada. However, she was not without controversy over her views on race (Chinese immigrants) and population control through sterilization. Lilian Whiting (1847-1942) was an American writer, editor, and advocate for women's suffrage. She was one of the first women to edit a newspaper?editor-in-chief of the Boston Budget in the 1890s.
