If this little book succeeds in convincing the reader that ethnolog-ical research is not only of academic interest, but also of practical value for a state burdened with the task of helping to develop a multitude of very different ethnic and cultural groups, then we should like to suggest to our friends and colleagues in Pakistan that they continue and finish the work we were unable to complete for want of time. Our subject was the Jat; "why" shall be explained in the next chapter. Our problem is a historical one: to examine cultural and ethnic relations between Pakistan and Iraq. This theme will demand some years more of literary study, but we already have some un-expected results after analyzing our purely ethnographical data. This allows a new grouping of the Jat with historical, ethnical, and practical implications. This grouping according to ethnographic evidence should be checked by critical observers. It demands from them an uncompromising respect for detail, which can hardly be shown by an interviewer who is dependent on Interpreters. Our Interpreters deserve our unlimited gratitude for all their help and troubles. However, they were not trained in the patience and vigilance of the scientist in regard to minor discrepancies in Information. They often filled up gaps in the Statements with their own knowledge, adjusted contradictions, and urged honest but slow-think-ing people to give Information which they might have stated differntly, had not our interpreters known it to be "right". We have not the slightest intention of blaming our helpers. Perhaps we did not do enough to emphasize the importance of unprejudiced and apparently contradictory Statements. Readily our interpreters assured us that they saw our point, but as soon as an interview was under way, they could not help becoming involved themselves. Only by employing more than one Interpreter were we able to retain some of the original "errors". It is the aim of this book to show that recording data just as they appear, without selection, correction or preconceived judgment, and to sort it afterwards is the only way to approach reality provided the questions are not haphazard, but of relevance to the problem at hand. In the hope that our first results will soon be followed by ever more reliable material, to the collection of which we wish to draw attention, we present this little book to the People of Pakistan.
