Hoewel hij op onderdelen kritisch is, spreekt uit het werk tevens bewondering voor de wijze waarop Nederland Java bestuurde.Het boek behoort tot de vroegste buitenlandse analyses van het Nederlandse koloniale bestuur en werd veel gelezen door politici, bestuurders en koloniale deskundigen in Europa. In latere studies over de koloniale geschiedenis van Indonesië wordt het nog regelmatig als eigentijdse bron aangehaald, met name vanwege de beschouwingen over de Javaanse maatschappij, de economische verhoudingen en de positie van de Chinese gemeenschap.De Bibliotheek Zendingsstudie Raad was de bibliotheek van de Zendingsstudie-Raad (ZSR), een Nederlandse interkerkelijke organisatie die in de jaren twintig van de twintigste eeuw werd opgericht om de wetenschappelijke bestudering van zending en niet-christelijke religies te bevorderen. De Raad bracht missionaire organisaties, kerken en theologen samen en publiceerde onder meer jaarverslagen, bibliografieën en studies over zending en wereldgodsdiensten.
